Village families find fun ways to celebrate holidays PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 Happy New Year to all and we hope everyone enjoyed the holiday season with family and friends. Catching up with events to finish 2016 include Graeme and Helen Craig travelling to Vancouver for a week. They went to celebrate Helen's sister Mary Elliott's 65th birthday. They encountered a lot of snow and basically report Vancouver was shut down. No snowplows but lots of snow. They say they will never complain about our Huron County roads again! Brian McGavin treated family members to an outing in Toronto. They went to the Canada/Switzerland World Juniors exhibition hockey game and saw Canada win the game 4-3 in overtime. Enjoying the game were Brian, Neil and Brandon McGavin and Laird Finlayson, Brian's father- in-law. Returning from Alberta before Christmas were Lorne and Bonnie Glanville. They had been there because of son Paul's serious accident. Paul will spend the winter in an Edmonton hospital recovering, but has a very positive recovery ahead. Lorne and Bonnie spent time with Paul and with his wife Theresa and girls Meghan and Erica in High Prairie. Neil and Marie McGavin have a special tradition before Christmas. They host only their grandchildren for a meal. They had nine out of 13 who were able to attend to enjoy the meal and spent the evening catching up with all their activities. The news of the passing of Ross Bennett before Christmas made us very sad. He was a wonderful, quiet man who will be missed by Nanci and Peter and their families. Ross was a soldier, a farmer, a bus driver and the custodian at Walton Public School. He was a character who had many good times and who related the tales to all. Many times I would receive vegetables from his bounteous garden at no charge. He asked only that I make sure to use them. A quick wit and the king of one-liners, he will be missed by Waltoners, as he had spent all of his 94 years in the Walton community and church. Our condolences to the Bennett family. I reported about Jean Bewley celebrating her 90th birthday and my, the lady was busy partying. A gathering of her family Brenda and Don Raven and boys and their families and daughter Mary and Wayne Baker of Bolton and some of their sons was enjoyed. A party of Jean's retirement home was held for all her new friends. Old friends Neil McDonald of Vancouver, Karin McDonald and Brian and Linda Marks of Calgary and Brenda joined Jean for a birthday lunch the day following her big day. Jean is a party animal! Happy birthday from all your Brussels friends. Christmas is a time of family gatherings and our family celebrated Boxing Day and Dec. 27. I spent Christmas Day preparing food for the next day, deviating from the normal Christmas fare with lasagna, meatballs, wings and fries. Traditional turkey dinner for the extended family dinner on Dec. 27 and then we had leftovers the rest of the week. For the first time in a few years, Neil and Marie McGavin had the entire family on hand for Christmas. They held the festivities at the home of Brian and Shelley and had all 23 attending plus a few extras. The McGavins have family scattered around Walton with Brian and Jeff, Cathy in Seaforth and Heather in North Bay. Grandchildren off to university on the east coast make it difficult for all to be home but they made it this year. They took the opportunity to have family pictures taken. It was a great idea for all. Our sympathies are extended to the Workman family on the passing of Isabel Workman. She will be missed by children Bonnie, Brian, Donna and Jacquie and their families. Our sympathies to Marguerite Thomas and Bob Kellington and family on the passing of Marguerite's mother Marie Oberle. Time for my winter reminder about snow removal around the mailbox. Mail carriers on rural routes must have a clear approach and departure at mailboxes, not just a few feet in front of the box. They do not have "go -go -gadget arms" to reach mailboxes surrounded by snow and getting stuck is not an option enjoyed by anybody. Remember not to block access to the box with garbage or recycling containers. Make your mail delivery safe for all concerned. The snowmobilers have been happy to see snow, then sad as it melted away - then happy again the week of Christmas as it returned. On this sunny Monday afternoon, we can see riders taking advantage of the trail and hope it will continue for them. A long-time effort Huron East Council recognized several staff members for contributions to the municipality during its last meeting of the year. Public Works Director Barry Mills was recognized for his 10 years of service with the municipality. From left: Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight, Mills and Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Congratulations to Trish McClure and Scott McLean on their marriage on New Year's Eve. Trish is the daughter of Donna McClure and the late Stan McClure. The wedding and reception was held at the Brodhagen Community Centre. It was a small intimate affair decorated in black, white and gold. Trish's attendants were her sister Tina as maid of honour and Amanda McClure, her sister-in-law. The party celebrated New Year's with hats and horns for the occasion. Travelling from Edmonton to attend the festivities was Uncle Wayne Willis. He has stayed on for a week's holiday with family members. The newlyweds will reside in Mitchell. Another New Year's Eve wedding was celebrated in Brussels. Justin Pipe, son of Murray and Tara Pipe married Kaitlyn Hynes in a lovely ceremony. The smaller affair of around 100 guests enjoyed dinner in the hall that was beautifully decorated in red and grey. Of course, hats and horns rang in the New Year and new path of married life. The couple will reside in Brussels. Congratulations to all. Celebrating birthdays to end December included Mark Gillis, Rob Dionne, Bryan McKague, Alaina Poland, Kandice Jacklin, Greg Fritz, Elise Ringgenberg, Hope Lowe, Judy Emmrich, Paul Flaxbard, Audrey Hackwell, Aubrey McClure. New Year's babies are Dave Linton, Brent Melady, Claire Mitchell, Alexandria Shahshahani and Brayden Shortreed, followed by Michael Craig, Don Nolan, Stephen Henderson, Ben Hoegy and Jodi McIntosh Nurse. Happy birthday to all. FROM WALTON Helping out The closure and subsequent sale of Duff's United Church was a tough decision for the village of Walton, but in the aftermath, many community groups, including the Blyth United Church have benefitted from donations made from the sale of the church structures. From left are Cliff Snell and Emily Phillips of Blyth United Church receiving a cheque from Duff's United Church trustees Karen Hoegy, Graeme Craig and Neil McGavin.
