Blyth, Bovens host endangered ball tournament
The local PeeWee Girls league
boasts 18 teams, 16 of which
travelled to the community for the
tournament.
In the end, it was the PDP
(Plattsville, Drumbo, Princeton)
Lightning that claimed gold in the A
Division, followed by the Exeter
Extremes l in second place and the
Goderich Seahawks, who claimed
the bronze.
In the B Division, the Mitchell
Hornets 1 triumphed over the rest,
followed by the Fullarton A's in
second and the Londesborough
Legends 2 in third.

scheduling problems prevented that and Blyth took on the challenge. (Hannah Dickie photo)

Blyth was home to a whole host of
activity over the weekend, not the
least of which was the Blyth
Festival's annual tradition of
Bonanza Weekend.
The Blyth Lions Club was also
busy hosting several breakfasts,
raising money for the Tanner Steffler
Foundation. However, the weekend
also played host to a sight not often
seen in the village as of late: a
baseball tournament.
Casey and Melissa Boven played
host to a PeeWee Girls baseball
tournament that is traditionally
hosted in Stratford over the
weekend.
Sixteen teams made their way to
Huron County for the competition,
with games scheduled on both Blyth
diamonds and in Londesborough
over the course of the weekend.
Due to a scheduling conflict, the
tournament, which is traditionally
held on the second weekend in
August, was proposed to be moved
to the following weekend. However,
Programs coming to
Blyth, Brussels: RRHC
This fall, Rural Response for
Healthy Children (RRHC) based in
Clinton will be rolling out inter-
generational programming in six
Huron County communities
including Blyth, Brussels and
Gorrie.
RRHC Executive Director Selena
Hazlitt says that the organization's
goal has always been to keep rural
children healthy. In recent years, the
focus has expanded slightly in the
hopes of achieving that goal.
Healthy parents and grandparents,
she said, will lead to healthy
children.
The Strengthening Huron
programming was rolled out
through the previous provincial
government's Ministry of Tourism,
Culture and Sport through its
Ontario Sport and Recreation
Communities Fund, which provided
nearly $100,000 over two years in
Huron County.
The programs will all be free, but
will require registration. The goal
will be to bring children out to the
programs, accompanied by their
parents or grandparents, though
Hazlitt says no one will be turned
away.

between the provincial competition
being held that weekend and parents
already taking vacation for the
traditional weekend, the tournament
seemed doomed.
The Bovens stepped in, not
wanting to see the tournament miss a
year, and proposed that it be held in
Blyth.
The two mulled over the logistics
of hosting the tournament — Melissa
with her event planning experience
and Casey with his ball tournament
experience — and began contacting
local service groups, volunteers and
businesses.
It didn't take long for them to gain
the confidence that Blyth could host
the tournament. They saw the
benefits as being two -fold: not only
would the tournament continue on,
but it would give them an
opportunity to show off Blyth and its
ability to host a big-time baseball
tournament.
