Three vie for Brussels Ambassador crown

Next Saturday, three young
women from Brussels will vie for
the Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador
crown ahead of the September event.
The competition is set for
Saturday, Aug. 11 at the Brussels
Legion. Doors open at 7 p.m. that
night and all are welcome to attend.
Free-will donations will be accepted
at the door.
The first contestant is Taylor
Dietrich -Illsley of Brussels.
Taylor is the daughter of Charlene
Dietrich -Illsley and David Illsley,
who all moved to Brussels in 2014.
Since coming to the village,
Taylor has enrolled as a member of
the Brussels Leo Club. She also
volunteers her time at the Huronlea
Home for the Aged and with the
PTE. Tyler William Todd Memorial
Ride. (Todd was a Canadian soldier
who was killed in Afghanistan in
2010.)
In the fall, Taylor will be returning
to F.E. Madill School for Grade 12
and as a member of the co-operative
education program. In the future,
she hopes to pursue higher
education and/or a career either as
a personal support worker or in
woodworking.
Taylor is a make-up and
hairstyling enthusiast who stays
active by dirt biking, running and
swimming She also likes spending
time with her friends and family and
listening to music.
Currently, Taylor has a job at the
Jam Jar Pub and Eatery as a
waitress, cook and dishwasher. She
also delivers newspapers around
Brussels in the hopes that she'll earn
enough money to buy her own car.
Taylor is sponsored by the
Huronlea Home for the Aged
Auxiiliary.
Amanda Morrison of Brussels is
the second contestant in this year's
competition.
The daughter of Glenda and
Darryl Morrison, Amanda is
planning on returning to F.E. Madill
School in the fall for her Grade 12
year. She then hopes to attend either
the University of Waterloo or Wilfrid
Laurier University to study
psychology.
Amanda is currently the treasurer
of the Brussels Leo Club with hopes

of becoming its president one day.
She is also involved in local 4-H
clubs and volunteers her time at both
the Brussels Legion and at local
churches.
Amanda is a peer mentor at her
school and when she returns in the
fall, she hopes to be her grade's
representative on the Student
Council, or its treasurer.
While she works at the Jam Jar
Pub and Eatery as a dishwasher and
cook, Amanda also works as a door
attendant at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre, babysits
and delivers newspapers around the
village.
She stays active by playing
baseball, basketball, road hockey
and soccer with her friends. She also
enjoys drawing and listening to
music as well as creating some
music of her own.
Amanda is sponsored by the
Majestic Women's Institute.
The third and final contestant in
this year's competition is Brittany
Struthers of Brussels.
Brittany is the daughter of
Michelle Muse of Brussels and
Randy Struthers of Wroxeter.
As a dual student, Brittany is in
the process of completing her final
two credits at F E Madill School
while also earning credits at
Conestoga College. She also served
as the Junior Secretary at F.E. Madill
while also completing co-operative

Huronlea Home for the Aged.
Brittany now works at the Jam Jar
Pub and Eatery and her future
aspirations include going to a
culinary college and studying
business management. Her hope is
that one day she will run her own
1970s -style diner with a menu
including three generations of
recipes.
She has been involved with the
Brussels 2967 Army Cadets for just
under 10 years. Brittany also
volunteers at the Brussels Farmers'
Market and has offered her time at
both the Brussels Youth Centre and
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship.
Brittany has won several awards
during her time with the cadets,
including the Top Junior Award and
Attendance and Captain Wegg
Awards. Through the cadet program,
Brittany Struthers
she has also developed an
appreciation for shooting military -
certified firearms.
She stays active by playing
volleyball and she enjoys baking,
cooking, babysitting and being a
caring mother to her daughter,
Jessica.
Brittany is sponsored by the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 218
Brussels.
Saturday, Aug. 11 will also mark
the end of Erin McMahon's reign as
Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador. That
night she will be handing over her
crown to one of the three
aforementioned young women.
Her job, however, isn't completely
done. McMahon will soon be
representing Brussels at the
provincial ambassador competition
at the Canadian National Exhibition
in Toronto later this month, a rite of
passage for local ambassadors.
