PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, AUGUST 2, 2018. End of July marks halfway point of summer A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Our summer days are slipping by and lots of fun is being had along the way. Reunions continue as a summer sport and they come in many forms, backyard picnics and beach days, a sleepover or a destination. No matter the form, it's the gathering that counts the most. It's recounting the last year, reviewing a special event or viewing old photos and telling the story that goes with the day. A social time for the "aged" ones and a learning time for the young is important. Mental health studies report that when children know their history, yes, the not -so -polished history, their ability to cope with the ups and downs of life improve greatly. So when the stories are being told be sure to include the not - so -sweet ones for the good of everybody. The sounds of sports teams together is another good thing about The new ride Members of Huron East and Morris-Turnberry Councils and the Brussels firefighters marked the arrival of their newest fire truck last week. The vehicle marks the first major capital purchase Morris-Turnberry has directly contributed to after purchasing a share of the department. Brussels Area Fire Board Chair John Lowe said he was happy to see the greater Brussels community receive an updated piece of equipment, something of which the local firefighters could be proud. (Shawn Loughlin Photo) At the Branch Summer marks move to exec. By Jo -Ann McDonald The week started with the executive meeting of the Brussels Legion Branch. Only executive meetings are held for the summer to carry on the business of the Branch, pay bills etc. The chairmen still make reports concerning what is happening in their departments. Branch Service Officer Mabel Glanville reports that Provincial Service Officer Rebecca Calder will be in our area in October. Anyone wishing a meeting with her must contact Mabel at 519-887-9086 before Sept. 24. The earlier you make the call, the more time you will be allowed to meet and speak with her. The Service Officer can help veterans or wives of deceased veterans with financial aid for many things including hearing aids, home care and even grass cutting. Please call and speak with Mabel and she can offer advice and arrange a meeting for you. New treasurer Nancy Bridge has presented the financial report and the bills to be paid. She is still adjusting to the Legion's ways and we are happy to have her with us, especially at this busy time in the accounting world. Upcoming events were discussed with the ball tournament food booth up first. Thanks to Scott McDonald, Jim Brown, Lisa Glanville, Jamie Mitchell and Andy Overholt for doing their part for set-up. There were 15 Comrades manning the cook shack during the weekend and we thank all for their help. Next is the Johnny Cash event on Aug. 10. The Branch needs help with the set-up on Wednesday, Aug. 8 and clean-up early Saturday morning Aug. 11. The Ambassador competition is Aug. 11 and they need time for their set-up, so cleanup must be done early in the morning. Bartending has been organized, but cooks are still needed for the chicken finger dinner to be held downstairs. Clean-up and door help are a few more bodies needed. Call the Branch and volunteer. The canteen committee had a few things to discuss and the old cooler was one. It has been inspected and deemed too costly to repair, so it needs to be discarded before Johnny Cash night. Deb will arrange to get help and have that done. New price signs are needed for the upstairs bar and the new draught line and beer are a positive and are being accepted well. Fish fry dinners are next with a qsaue >4 `Aleut , dd fuel? Let everyone know about your new bundle of joy! couple in August after a short break in July. Volunteers are needed for the Mitchell fry on Friday, Aug. 3 and then the Blyth fry is next on a Saturday. Call Deb Ross at 519-887- 9940 for dates or if you can help. The Branch will host a fish fry on Sept. 22 for Legion week. The District Zone Youth will be held in August at the Branch and Comrade Nanci Ducharme will attend. summer. From our deck, we are able to hear and see some of the ball games held behind the arena. Enthusiasm is such a nice sound to hear and lots could be heard on Saturday from the long-running Brussels Tigers tournament. Weekday and Sunday afternoon soccer has also given this season a reason to celebrate health, vitality and sportsmanship. The last of July is always sobering. Yes, a holiday for The Citizen crew, but half of the summer has been spent, so a scramble to decide what needs to occur to make this time memorable. So many choices! The DeWit held an open house on Sunday; an opportunity for the public to see the new accommodations available in our village. The DeWit is a fine addition to the other overnight spots that Brussels offers. In that same vein, the Four Winds Barn is hosting an open house on Saturday, Aug. 11. The market is postponed that week for a day so that visitors can see the whole barn in action. There is no Citizen that week, so mark that day on your calendar now so you can see the barn in its entirety. The United Church of Canada General Council meeting was held last week in Oshawa. Business to handle the changes in our church was decided and a new moderator was elected. For many in our area, Rev. Richard Bott was a familiar fellow as he worked with pastoral relations with our Huron -Perth Presbytery. It's very reassuring when change is happening when you know meetings The Catch the Ace tickets are out and about and the first draw is Friday evening. You can watch it live on Facebook at the Legion site and see if you are the winner! The Branch will be sponsoring a Brussels Agricultural Society Ambassador event competitor on Aug. 11. The public is welcome to attend on Saturday evening to hear the speeches and the crowning of the new Ambassador.
