Tigers claim A -A Championship at home tournament
Going yard
The Brussels Tigers were the victors of their own tournament over the weekend, prevailing in
the A -A Championship game over the Linwood Chiefs by a score of 2-1. The locals were
buoyed by this Ty Sebastian home run, which he is seen trotting out and two Chiefs are seen
admiring. Sebastian didn't just do it with the bat that game, he was also the team's star on the
mound, tossing a no-hitter to silence the Linwood bats. Hailing from just a few minutes south,
the Walton Brewers claimed the B -A Championship with a win over the Goderich Grizzlies by
a score of 4-1. (Quinn Talbot photo)

The Brussels Tigers bested the
Linwood Chiefs in a low -scoring
2-1 final game to win the A -A
championshiop the Brussels squad's
own 47th annual Men's Invitational
Fastball Tournament to keep the top
honours at home.
The Chiefs, who had laid waste to
Harwood Corners 10-0 and bested
Walton 2-0 in their early bracket
games, were felled by the Tigers
Sunday night for the final game.
The Tigers, on Friday night,
bested the Delaware Highlanders
11-0 before edging out the Kitchener
Selects 2-0 to earn a berth in the
semi-final To get to the finals, the
Tigers nearly shutout the Fullarton
A's 13-1.
Shawn Daw of the Brussels Tigers
said the weekend was a great one
even before the Tigers took the A -A
final.
"The weekend started with a half
hour rain delay," he said. "Once the
games got started, the weather was
great for the weekend."
He said the Tigers had an
impressive offence, outscoring their
opponents 28-2, with good pitching
as well.
Daw pitched the first game against
the Delaware Highlanders, earning
the 11-0 shutout win. For the second
game, Dennis Dewar and Ty
Sebastian split responsibilities with
Dewar pitching nearly six full
innings and Sebastian earning the
save in the 2-0 win.
Sebastian also pitched the
shortened three -inning 13-1 win
over the Fullarton A's.
He stayed on the mound for the
full seven innings of the A -A final
against Linwood, recording a rare
no-hitter in which the opposing team
scored a run, but still went down 2-
1.
The tournament started Friday
evening and featured a dozen teams
from near and far.
Locally, the Walton Brewers, after
being edged out by Harwood
Corners 3-2 in both teams' opening
game, posted a convincing 8-1 win
over the Monkton Muskrats to
advance to the B -A Finals. The

TransCan coming
Few events are more synonymous
with tourism in Huron County than
the Walton TransCan Grand
National Championship motocross
event at the Walton Raceway.
After taking 2017 off, one of the
county's marquee events is back for
Aug. 14-18.
The event has been running for
over 25 years, bringing riders from
all over North America to the small
hamlet of Walton for days of world-
class motocross.
However, motocross is still what
the raceway does best and the
TransCan is the crown jewel of the
Walton Raceway.
The amateur championships run
Aug. 14-17, while the Pro National
Championship will take to the
course on Saturday, Aug. 18.
In recent years, the event has
expanded to include many different
events for those with a variety of
interests, including a concert that
has been played by the likes of
country music sensation Brett Kissel
and others.
The owners of the raceway have
also taken big steps to improve the
spectator experience as well,
improving walkability and
thoroughfares around the grounds,
as well as including spectator
seating and improving sightlines.
The event begins on Monday, Aug.
13 with sign -in for amateur riders
and the opening ceremonies at 7
p.m. that night.
On Tuesday morning, riders will
be on the course beginning at 7:15
a.m. for practise, followed by dozens
of races throughout the day.
The action continues on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday,
with races running from 7 a.m. to
nearly 6 p.m. every day.
Friday will conclude at the
raceway with the presentation of the
year's Amateur Award.
On Saturday, the professionals
will take to the raceway, beginning
with several practices between 8-
9:30 a.m. Races continue through
the morning until everyone breaks
for the opening ceremonies of the
Walton TransCan Grand National
Championship at 12:30 p.m.
The MX1 and MX2 riders will
then be on the track throughout the
afternoon, with races running until
3:35 p.m., when the final race of the
day is set to start.
