South Huron 4-H Sheep Club visits Pullen flock
Getting things done
The South Huron 4-H Sheep Club held its third meeting at the home of the Pullens, where
members learned about the family's sheep flock. (Photo submitted)
By Evy Verschaeve
The third meeting of the South
Huron 4-H Sheep Club was held at
the Pullen residence outside of
Clinton. Members played a game
called Zip Zap Zop while leaders got
everything ready for the meeting. By
6:45 p.m. members were ready for
the meeting and the vice-president
started with the 4-H pledge. The roll
call question was, "What are you
excited to learn and do in this club?"
while attendance was taken.
Answers included going to fairs,
judging and Go For The Gold at the
Clinton United Church.
The minutes from the last meeting
were read along with the treasurer's
report before the youth leader Evan
Krebs, taught the other members
how to judge food -grade soybeans.
When judging grains, it is important
to look for uniform colour and size
in the samples, with little debris,
damage or disease.
After the official reasons were
given for the judging of the beans,
Florence Pullen taught members
about the different types of housing
for sheep, along with the advantages
and disadvantages of each type.
Florence has both a pole barn and a
bank barn which is set up in a way
that her sheep can go inside at night
to protect themselves from
predators. The Pullens have one of
few registered sheep flocks in
Ontario. All of their sheep are
tattooed with their own code, three
specialized letters, KRB, which are
associated with this flock, and a
letter to help identify which year
they were born.
Members then judged replacement
breeding ewe lambs after discussing
the parts of a sheep and what an
ideal lamb would look like. After
some further discussion regarding
the sheep, the lambs were released
from their halters and the group
headed back to the yard. The
meeting ended with the 4-H motto.
