His flock is the only place where we can really know that we are safe and secure. Jesus said, "I am the Good Shepherd; the Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep" He has proven his care and faithfulness to the sheep by dying for them. So what are we safe from? First of all, we are protected from an uncertain future. Jesus died on the cross as a payment for our sin against God. We have all sinned against God our Creator and the Bible teaches us that there awaits a day in which we will all give an account to God for our sin. Jesus is the only way that we can be pardoned from our sin and from eternal judgment. We enter His flock as one of His sheep when we receive Jesus as our Saviour by believing in Him and trusting in Him. If we are "in Jesus Christ" we can truly say that everything is going to be alright in the future. Once we are in His flock, He continues to protect us. This does not necessarily mean that we are going to be spared from all the uncertainties of life. Christians get sick just like other people. Christians sometimes face economic hardships. They get caught in political conflicts and we suffer for our faith at times too. But through it all God promises to be with us. He comforts us, tells us He loves us, reminds us of what awaits us in heaven, and He gives us the encouragement of other Christians to walk through hardships with us. We pray together, sing together, cry together, listen to God's word together, and we do this together under the watchful, protecting, leading care of our Good Shepherd, Jesus. In Him we are safe and secure. The Regional Ministry of Hope Everyone Welcome! PAGE 19. From the Minister's Study Look to God to live life safe and secure By Pastor Andrew Versteeg Brussels Community Bible Chapel Safe and secure - that is how we all want to live our lives. If there is something that is very basic to our well-being, it is safety, stability, and security for the future. We know this to be true in our own lives. When we have this sense that everything is alright, we sleep well, we are happy, we enjoy the company of others and we are motivated to be productive. Unfortunately this sense of safety and security is something that we more often pursue than presently enjoy. There are many dangers that surround us each day that threaten to rob us of this restful and peaceful feeling. I think it is safe to say that this is true even for us who live here in Canada - a relatively secure and stable country. I sometimes think about what people endure who live in parts of the world that are constantly at war; places where there is little safety of any kind - children who are born and raised in these places of constant fear. I especially became aware of this when I became a parent. As a parent what I want for my children is to be able to provide an environment for them to live in that is safe and secure. I want them to be able to put their heads down on their pillows at night without a ton of fears. I want them to be able to dream about the fun and excitement of the day and look forward to some new adventures the following day. But life is not always safe and secure; in fact it rarely is. There are dangers all around us. Recently our three-year-old daughter dealt with some recurring bouts of a nasty stomach bug that the doctors could not diagnose. We were awake with her a number of nights. There were a number of trips to the emergency room. She needed IV fluids and we felt helpless as we watched her go through this, becoming weaker with every recurring bout. It made us feel scared. There are many things that rob us of our sense of safety and security. There are health issues, political and financial issues, environmental concerns, relationship breakdowns, etc. Writing as a Christian on behalf of the church I can say that we sometimes wonder when we might face hostilities because of our faith, as many Christians do around the world. So where can we go to find safety and security and peace for our souls? On Sunday, I spoke from John, CIP coming to NH By Denny Scott The Citizen North Huron Council has taken one of the first steps towards developing a Community Improvement Plan (CIP) that should help in procuring funding for projects like facade renewals through government agencies. The document, when completed, will also help direct development of the municipality's two commercial cores. Huron County Planner Laura Simpson presented a background file for the CIP at council's July 9 meeting. The file contained a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis which will be reviewed by North Huron staff to create the CIP. It also outlined the CIP study areas of Blyth and Wingham, which included the entire town and village, respectively. The SWOT analysis indicated that each ward had strengths, including facilities like post offices, libraries, Memorial Hall in Blyth and the (currently closed) North Huron Museum in Wingham. It also pointed to beautification aspects as well as green spaces that are strengths for the community. Architectural and heritage aspects were also highlights of the study. Weaknesses identified included lack of accessible entries, different Continued on page 20 chapter 10 about Jesus being the Good Shepherd. One of the chief concerns of the shepherd is to provide safety and security for the sheep. The passage mentions `thieves and robbers' who try to steal away the sheep. And the passage has a lot to say about how Jesus, the Good Shepherd, protects His sheep and blesses them with "abundant life". Some of the main characters in the Bible were shepherds who knew how to care for sheep. Jacob, in Genesis 31:38, 40, describes his life as a shepherd: "These 20 years I have been with you; your ewes and your female goats have not miscarried, nor have I eaten the rams of your flocks. This was my situation: by day the heat consumed me and the frost by night, and my sleep fled from my eyes." David, who became the second king of Israel, learned the responsibilities of a shepherd at a young age looking after his father's flocks. David went after lions and bears who were trying to steal away the lambs, and he killed them in order to defend the sheep (1 Samuel 17:34- 37). In John, Chapter 10, Jesus tells us that He is the Good Shepherd. At night the Good Shepherd puts the sheep in the sheep pen and He sleeps in the doorway as the `Door' protecting His sheep inside. During the day He leads them out to good pasture and water. He watches over them as the lambs run about and play. His eye is always on them watching out for dangers, not letting them wander away, tending to their BRUSSELS United Church Join us July 29 at 9:30 am Worship leadership by pastors from Huron/Perth Meet us at our Hospitality Booth at "The Barn" every Friday from 2 to 6 pm Everyone Welcome MELVILLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH BRUSSELS We will be closed for the month of July Reopening for worship on August 5th Fridays 11:30 am - 1:00 pm - Soup & More 2 - a free community meal held in Melville's basement, and made possible by the Brussels churches working together.
