Ontario AACA members visit Brussels landmark Talking shop The Ontario region branch of the Antique Automobile Club of America was on its annual London to Brighton tour last week and, for the first time, it made its way to Huron County. Organized this year by long-time member Arnold Kerry, he was directed to Don McNeil's auto shop and museum by a friend from Kincardine who had been there before. McNeil welcomed nearly 40 cars and their drivers that day before they continued on their way. (Shawn Loughlin photo) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen museum welcomed nearly 40 antique vehicles last week as part of the Antique Automobile Club of Don McNeil's famous shop and America, Ontario Region's annual London to Brighton tour. This tour is the 61st in the club's history, dubbed the "Huron Shores Tour" that made its way through M -T to hire Brockelbank By Denny Scott The Citizen Morris-Turnberry and North Huron are sharing another service with the appointment of Property Standards Officer Bruce Brockelbank who already handles the responsibility elsewhere in Huron County. Currently, the two municipalities share a chief building official. Previously, the two councils tried to share public works departments, however that project was dismantled less than a year after it was finalized. While Morris-Turnberry did appoint Brockelbank by bylaw during its July 17 meeting, council wanted to be sure that there was a method to gauge his performance in the position. The issue had been previously discussed between council and Chief Building Official Kirk Livingston. Livingston also addressed the issue with North Huron Council, though the discussions all occurred in closed - to -the -public meetings because they dealt with identifiable individuals. Brockelbank is being brought on for a six-month probationary period, which prompted some council members to ask how his performance would be evaluated at the end of that period. Councillor Jim Nelemans asked Looking back The Blyth Festival Art Gallery opened its second professional show of the season Friday night and it takes a look back at work of the Huron Society of Artists, a collection of some of the county's greatest artists that dissolved two decades ago. (Shawn Loughlin photo) how senior staff and council would evaluate Brockelbank, and Administrator Clerk -Treasurer Nancy Michie explained that would be part of the hiring bylaw. Nelemans said his concerns carne as a result of previous building inspectors tasked with handling bylaw enforcement who didn't produce results. He said whichever direction council and staff proceeded with would be fitting, provided there is a way to review Brockelbank's performance. Michie said a performance review would come at the end of the six- month period. Councillor Sharen Zinn said she didn't see there being much of a concern if there were monthly reports from Brockelbank. Michie pointed out, however, that most property standards issues are confidential, so any report would be in a closed -to -the -public meeting. Councillor Dorothy Kelly said that a report should come from the Chief Building Official that included non -confidential information. Michie said a list of properties could be provided in the closed -to - the -public meeting, however Zinn said that she was more interested in knowing how much time was being spent on issues than where the properties were located and which property owners were responsible. "I want to see something that says [Brockelbank] spent X hours dealing with this issue," she said. Michie said a report of actual hours spent on unidentifiable occurrences could be generated. Council approved the bylaw appointing Brockelbank to the position, with Michie noting that North Huron Council would need to adopt a similar bylaw, which it did at its meeting on Monday night. Kincardine and Brussels for the first time ever on its way across the province. Member Arnold Kerry was the architect of this year's tour and it was a friend of his in Kincardine who advised him that McNeil's location might be of interest to members of the club. Kerry has been a member of the club for nearly 30 years and has participated in over 20 of the club's annual marquee rides. In an interview with The Citizen, he said that it has travelled all across the province, most notably in the Ottawa region and even as far north as Manitoulin Island, but he couldn't remember it ever coming to Huron County, so he was happy he was able to make that happen. He said that in the club's short time in the village, Brussels residents had been very nice and accommodating. Kerry and his wife were travelling in a 100 -year-old 1918 Buick that Kerry had bought in the early 1990s. To help welcome members of the club to Brussels, McNeil invited members of the community with classic cars to be at his house when the club showed up, including Bob Richmond and others. He also made sure that hot dogs were on the barbecue and that a trio of young girls were on hand to provide some live music for the afternoon for all in attendance.
