Four Winds Barn sets grand opening for Aug. 11-12
While the Brussels Four Winds
Barn has already played host to
several weddings and the weekly
Brussels Farmers' Market, its grand
opening weekend is now set for Aug.
11-12.
The Four Winds Barn is the vision
of Bryan Morton, who hoped to
create a hub in Brussels that would
bring people together, whether it be
through a wedding or other
community activities like shopping
or a farmers' market for the village.
It was constructed over the winter
months and officially opened to the
public earlier this year.
The special grand opening
weekend will begin at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, Aug. 11 for a special
Brussels Farmers' Market and a
family day at the barn.
In addition to food vendors, there
will be arts and crafts, live
entertainment and face -painter
Snippity the Clown that day until
activities wrap up at 4 p.m.
There will also be a food booth at
the barn that day provided by Huron
Residential Hospice.
On Sunday, the barn will host two

The Tanner Steffler Foundation's twin Six String Summerfest and Music Fest events, held
Saturday afternoon and evening at the Seaforth Agriplex, saw 400 attendees come to the
family -friendly events earlier in the day and 700 come to the music fest later that night. The
event, which included a silent auction, was a fundraiser for the Tanner Steffler Foundation
which seeks to combat mental health and addiction problems in Huron County. (Quinn Talbot photo)
CH seeks input on buck and does
Despite a staff recommendation
that Central Huron get out of the
buck and doe business, council has
deferred a motion with hopes of
acquiring some more information.
Facilities Manager Steve Duizer
spoke to the issue at council's July
16 meeting, saying that two recent
buck and does resulted in some
concerns in regards to both
employee safety and liability.
Without the OPP involved and
with the municipality having to hire
private security for such events,
concerns have arisen.
"Recent buck and doe events held
on the arena floor at the Central
Huron Community Centre have
resulted in some concerns from both
an employee safety and liability
perspective," Duizer wrote in his
report. "One held this past month
proceeded against the municipal
facilities employee's direction when
the hired security firm was late and
the employee was advised two males
were openly carrying knives on the
arena floor. The facility manager
attended and shut down the event
until numerous conditions were met
by the hosting parties.
"The buck and doe preceding that
one in 2017 resulted in security
leaving at 1 a.m. before all in
attendance had cleared the building,
leaving a sole facility employee to
manage a large crowd."
Duizer did say that the problem
isn't a major one, since very few
buck and does are held in the
municipality any longer (four have
been held in Central Huron since the
beginning of 2017). However, due to
safety concerns, he told council he
was recommending that the
municipality cease playing host to
buck and does.
He also stated that with an average
of under $1,000 in profit from each
event, it wasn't as if the municipality
was getting rich by hosting buck and
doe parties.
Several councillors, however,
questioned how neighbouring

and Blyth, leading to those
structures and sites being declared
surplus.
According to a report made by
KPMG LLP, the total cost of the
ESTC expansion, which resulted in
the site as it is now, was
approximately $1.95 million,
including a $1.2 million debenture
with Ontario Infrastructure and
Lands Corporation. That debenture
was split 55 per cent ($660,000) to
the ESTC and was to be paid
through funds raised by the centre
and 45 per cent to the Township of
North Huron for use by the Fire
Department ($540,000).
When asked where this
new facility would be, Vincent
said "on municipal property in
Blyth."
municipalities, such as Huron East,
were able to make it work.
Council voted to defer the
recommendation, opting to direct
staff to conduct some more research
and return the issue to council at a
future meeting.
Each performance will feature sets
by the Purple Hill Band and Jamie
Warren.
There will be a ribbon -cutting
ceremony at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Those wanting to book tickets for
Sunday are asked to call Kathy
Stephenson at 1-226-889-2276.
