Sports Tournament starts Friday with Brussels vs. Delaware A tradition The Brussels Tigers, who recently took on a mens' squad from Australia in an exhibition game, shown above, are getting ready to host their annual invitational tournament this weekend. The Linwood Chiefs are the team to beat after they took home the championship last year by beating out the Wingham Hitmen. (Fite photo) Nelemans wary of using consultant for BMGCC Councillor Dorothy Kelly has updated Morris-Turnberry Council on the plans of the committee behind proposed renovations at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, saying they are turning to professional help to achieve its goals. Councillor Dorothy Kelly, Morris- Turnberry's representative on the Brussels, Morris and Grey Recreation Board, said that during a recent meeting the committee had received a presentation from a consultant to help with the project, including a preliminary costing to create a plan for the the building. Kelly said she wasn't sure if the committee would take the proposal offered or seek other consultants' offerings first, however Councillor Jim Nelemans said he was wary of involving consultants. Nelemans said, in his experience, sometimes having a consultant can cost more than the project itself, though, with the project potentially costing between $1-$2 million, according to Mayor Paul Gowing, Nelemans said that was unlikely. When Councillor John Smuck asked if Morris-Turnberry would be required to contribute to the project, Kelly said she would update council regarding the project's requirements in the future. hare your news y placing your announcement in Te Citizen Call fopricing & details 519-523-4792 or 519-887-9114 By Denny Scott The Citizen The Brussels Tigers' 47th annual Men's Invitational Fastball Tournament, held this weekend in the village, marks a return to the traditional 12 -team schedule that fans and players have come to know and love. The tournament runs July 27-29. The Tigers will open the tournament with a game against the Delaware Highlanders at 7:30 p.m. on the community baseball diamond. After that, at 9:15 p.m., the Goderich Grizzlies will take on the Kitchener Selects. On Saturday morning, the action starts at 8:30 a.m. with the Monkton Muskrats taking on Harwood Corners. The Linwood Chiefs then take on the Walton Brewers. At the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre baseball diamond on Saturday morning, the Wroxeter Rippers will be taking on the Port Stanley Pirates at 10:45 a.m., followed by the Fullarton A's taking on the Glencoe Astros. Semi-finals follow on Saturday evening with the finals set for Sunday throughout the day. For a full schedule, check out the schedule advertised on page 11 of this week's edition of The Citizen. Brussels Tigers representative Shawn Daw said that last year, the tournament was down two teams, resulting in a change to the schedule. This year, with the addition of some new teams and a lot of regular teams returning, competition is back up to a dozen. New teams this year include the Delaware Highlanders and the Glencoe Astros. Daw also said the Wroxeter Rippers are returning to the tournament after being absent for a few years. Regulars like the Harwood Corners, Fullarton A's, Goderich Grizzlies and Kitchener Selects have been coming for years while the Linwood Chiefs, featuring local player George Armstrong who typically suits up with the Wingham Hitmen, will be returning for the second year. Daw said that one minor change to the tournament this year is that each team will receive $25 per win, meaning that teams that are bested in the semi-finals or earlier don't necessarily walk away empty- handed. The tournament functions as a fundraiser for the Brussels Tigers which, after covering expenses donate money towards buying jerseys and equipment for Brussels Minor Baseball and maintaining the diamonds in the community. Daw said that, thanks to the generosity of a local business owner, a significant number of youth baseball gloves have been donated to the Brussels Optimist Club, which will be distributed at the tournament. Daw said to track down a member of the Brussels Tigers or visit the pavilion during the tournament for details. The start of a streak? Last year, the Brussels Tigers ended the season on a high note winning the Huron County Fastball League Championship. Will they be able to add a second trophy win by conquering their own annual tournament this weekend? Take in a few games and find out.
