Dry weather leads to multiple local farm fire calls PEOPLE AROUND WALTON By Jo -Ann McDonald Call 887-6570 We finally have had some rain to make most everyone happy. The crops will grow to make farmers happy, gardens will grow to make happy vegetables, the flower gardens will refresh and bloom and, hopefully, the grass will become green again, instead of crunchy brown. Unfortunately, around here we just had a small amount of rain and could use more. On the other hand, many farmers are at the wheat harvest and did not want the rain just yet. Can't keep everyone happy, but I think most will agree, we need the rain. I had the warning about being careful and watchful while combining the wheat and it was on target. There were at least five fire calls on Thursday around the area for combines, fields or both. The neighbour, John Huether had a fire in his combine, but they managed to get the combine out of the field, but lost some acres of crop. The two neighbours, a Shortreed boy and Bruce Schmidt, were quick into action and cultivated and disced around the burning acres and reduced the loss of acres of crop. Another friend we know was quick to realize that he could see smoke and managed to put out the small fire in his combine before it was out of hand, or had the field on fire. It is a dry time and all precautions need to be taken. We have Neil McDonald here from Vancouver for a week's holiday. He is checking in with relatives, friends and on the construction at his home. He arrived during the hot spell, but is enjoying the cooler weather during the week. He returned to Vancouver after a week. Also returning to Vancouver is Mary Elliott. She had a great visit with Graeme and Helen Craig as well as many of the other Elliott relatives at the Elliott reunion at their brother Bob's in the north. Our sympathies are extended to Shelley and Brian McGavin on the passing of Shelley's mother, Ruby Finlayson. She will be missed by her husband Laird and family of Sharon, Obituaries as expressions of your sympathy. The Edge of Walton and Walton Raceway held its youth sports camp this past week with 60 young girls and boys attending daily. They learn about and participate in a variety of activities including, canoeing, bicycling, motocross biking, the obstacle course, tower climbing, team sports, hiking the nature trails and much more. It is a full day of activities and many go home very tired at night but excited to return the next day for a new adventure. Our congratulations to George Adams on celebrating his 90th birthday on the weekend. A lovely afternoon gathering was held at the Wroxeter Hall hosted by his children Carol, Alex and Susan. Happy birthday George! It was a house full of family and friends gathering at the home of Ken and Anne Williamson on Sunday. The reason was to celebrate Anne's 70th birthday. Ken's birthday is the day before, but he insisted that this be Anne's special day for a special birthday. The family invited friends and neighbours and provided all the food for the day. Even though they had to be indoors, no one minded, because they all know we need the rain. Happy birthday Anne! Celebrating birthdays this past week were Kristen Curreri, Dianne Flood, Sharon Godkin Paterson, Fighting fires Local fire departments had a busy period in the past weeks with field fires, structure fires and vehicle fires.
