Fiddle event brings out large audience, many fiddlers A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 The toes were a -tapping at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Sunday as the Lions Club ably hosted their annual shindig. For the fiddle connoisseurs it was a dreamy way to pass a summer afternoon. The large numbers in attendance were there to appreciate the music of drums, guitars and, of course, the fiddles. The fiddler talents were rotated and each grouping was truly appreciated. To fill in rest times, the Onn sisters, Cappy and Zoey shared their musical gifts and the Hillers took their part making for a fun afternoon. Summer is the time for family reunions and there have been several in our areas as distant family come to Ontario or local families make the Cutting a rug The annual Brussels Lions Club Fiddle Jamboree at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre saw fiddlers take to the stage and dancers take to the floor on Sunday afternoon. The event encourages fiddlers and other musicians of all skills to come out for a day of fun and mUSIC. (Quinn Talbot photo) At the Branch effort to stop the busy life for a day and recall their roots. For us, Whitechurch was the place to be on Saturday as the Galbraith and Watson family congregated. Sisters Alma and Gene married brothers Carson and Reg many years ago and now their offspring share stories and food with the young people growing up so fast. A box of old pictures was a fun sorting time as changes in styles, fashion, even way of life were noted, with related stories offered by those who knew. Cousins who spent time together at the grandparents each summer had a great time reconnecting, enjoying the pause in busy lives. The Kid's Corner crew report a good week, getting to know each other in their effort to make our community and the world a better place. The positive side of having a vacancy in the pulpit department of our United Church is the opportunity to hear a variety of voices each Sunday. Blyth and Brussels United Churches share ministry, so a combined effort is made to continue the work of the church while we patiently wait for our next leader. We have had the thoughts and visions of farmers, ministers, librarians and conservation workers shared with us and each has expanded our faith. Now it's break time, both churches are closed for August vacation giving members an opportunity to worship with another congregation; Local leading walk After being named honorary chair of the event in 2016 and 2017, Brussels resident Christopher Pennington will be spending the summer preparing for his team to be the best at the Goderich Kidney Walk. Aside from having a team in the walk, Christopher's Crew, he is also the walk ambassador. Pennington was born with an auto -immune disorder called Henoch-Schonlein Purpura. The disorder results in inflammation and bleeding in small blood vessels in the skin, joints, intestines and kidneys. The disorder can also result in kidney damage, which for Pennington is a significant concern as he was only born with one. Pennington has persevered through his situation, continuing to play on local sports teams, including hockey and soccer. He even helped his teams achieve accolades including, several years ago, a provincial silver medal in baseball for the Brussels Squirts and a Western Ontario Athletics Association (WOAA) gold medal as the goaltender for the Blyth - Brussels Atom LL Crusaders. Pennington was also named the `Catch the Ace' raffle returns By Jo -Ann McDonald It's Back! The Catch the Ace progressive raffle has returned. Due to the growing interest and the repeated question "when is the Branch going to start the next draw," we decided to start again. The first draw will be Aug. 3 and the tickets are back at the normal retail outlets in Brussels and Walton. My apologies for missing Murray's Barbershop in last week's issue, but yes he has them, as do Bulk and Bargain, Jam Jar, Janice at Turning Heads and Making Waves, the Branch and Walton Inn We are hoping folks will come out and support the Ring of Fire Johnny Cash tribute show we are hosting Aug. 10 at 8 p.m at the Brussels Legion Branch. The show is fantastic and there will be food available before the show downstairs. The Branch will be serving a chicken finger dinner, salad and dessert from 5:30 - 7 p.m. for $10! Contact the Branch for tickets for the show or pick them up at Bulk and Bargain or Jo -Ann's Hairstyling for the advance price of $20 each. Tickets are $25 at the door. The Branch was the venue for the celebration of life for the late Ben Bridge. Ben was a Brussels boy, who left our town to settle in Petrolia where he was an auto body mechanic. He started his own business: B&B Collision. Left to mourn his passing are children Laurie, Ivan and Lois and their families. Our condolences to the Bridge families. Helping at the Branch were Comrades Deb Ross, Jo -Ann McDonald, Lisa Glanville, Joan Smith and Mary Bradshaw. There was no Saturday afternoon euchre as they have been cancelled until the fall. The Branch is looking for volunteers to help once a month or once every two months. Any help is appreciated. The Sunday Night dance had a small crowd in attendance to enjoy the Crippled Duck band. We congratulate many youth of our area who attended the Royal Canadian Legion Provincial Track and Field competition at the Niagara Olympic Complex in St. Catharines on July 13-14. Congratulations to Ryan Jacklin who captured first in hammer throw, second in discus and fifth in javelin. Matt Oldridge finished seventh in triple jump and fouled out in long jump. Carson Heise finished eighth in shot put, seventh in discus and 1 lth in javelin and Lucas Jacklin finished fourth in javelin, 10th in shot put and eighth in discus.
