Lambs steady while goats, sheep sell higher
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending July
13 were 1,865 cattle and 831 lambs
and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and
heifers sold steady and fancier cattle
sold at a premium. Fancy steers and
heifers sold $155 to $160 with a high
of $160.50. Choice steers and heifers
sold $152 to $155. Second cut sold
$148 to $152. Cows sold steady. On
Thursday beef, right weight and
slightly heavy holstein veal sold
steady while plain and heavy
holstein veal sold on an easier trade.
Lambs sold steady while goats and
sheep sold higher. On Friday calves
and yearlings sold actively at steady
prices.
M -R Farms of Exeter, consigned
19 heifers that averaged 1,319 lbs.
and sold for an average price of
$154.96. One charolais heifer
weighed 1,405 lbs. and sold for
$160.50. Rod Bren Farms of
Wingham, consigned seven head
that averaged 1,404 lbs. and sold for
an average price of $149.74. One red
heifer weighed 1,490 lbs. and sold
for $154.40.
John Richardson of Harriston,
consigned 10 head that averaged
1,290 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $148.07. One blue steer
weighed 1,420 lbs. and sold for
$159. Chris Smith of Brussels,
consigned 14 steers that averaged
1,520 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $154.49. Four limousin
steers averaged 1,430 lbs. and sold
for an average price of $157.
There were 225 cows on offer.
Beef sold $75 to $85 with sales to
$110; D1 and D2, $73 to $78 with
sales to $90; D3, $68 to $72. Francis
Walters of Mildmay, consigned one
black cow that weighed 1,460 lbs.
and sold for $110.
There were 13 bulls selling $80.50
to $102. Wayne and Kody Roddick
of Petrolia, consigned one black bull
that weighed 1,175 lbs. and sold for
$102.
There were 260 head of veal on
offer. Beef sold $140 to $180 with
sales to $200; good holsteins, $115
to $122 with sales to $130; Si heavy
holsteins, $100 to $110; heavy
holsteins, $90 to $100. Jism Maw of
Forest, consigned six head that
averaged 787 lbs. and sold for an
average price of $161.48. One blue
steer weighed 780 lbs. and sold for
$200. Paul M. Martin of Lucknow,
consigned five head that averaged
817 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $157.68. One blonde heifer
weighed 755 lbs. and sold for $170.
Nelson Becker of Ayton, consigned
seven holstein steers that averaged
729 lbs. and sold for an average
price of $111.92. One holstein steer
weighed 785 lbs. and sold for $130.
Lambs under 50 lbs. sold $262 to
$290; 50 - 64 lbs., $282 to $305; 65
- 79 lbs., $264 to $285; 80 - 94 lbs.,
$258 to $272; 95 - 109 lbs., $262 to
$266; 110 lbs. and over, $253 to
$260 / lb.
Sheep sold $100 to $150.
Goats: billies sold $150 to $300;
nannies, $75 to $125; kids — dairy,
$200 to $275; meat, $250 to $365 /
lb.

4-H Beef Club visits Blyth Vet Services

The second meeting of the
Lucknow 4-H Beef Club was held
on Thursday, May 31 at 7 p.m. at the
Lucknow Legion.
To start the meeting off, the club
did the 4-H pledge followed by
the minutes from the previous
meeting, secretary's report,
treasurer's report and paperwork.
Leader Holly Holyoake
introduced Dr. Phil Garriock from
Blyth Vet Services. Phil presented a
slide show to the club demonstrating
a "healthy calf'. This slideshow
consisted of the type of vaccines,
disease prevention, how to tell if
your calf is sick and what to do if it
is sick, as well as information on
respiratory diseases, coccidiosis,
acidosis, bloating, strawberry foot,
foot rot, warts, ringworm, and lice
and mange.
Since 4-H is a major window to
the public about agriculture, Phil
explained each topic and how it can
be prevented and how it could

Restaurant for allowing us to have a
fundraiser at their locations. It is
very much appreciated.

discussion on what a judge would
look for in a market animal and a
breeding animal. The meeting was
adjourned and snacks were enjoyed
by all.
