Locals mark 60th anniversary A NOTE FROM BETTY Under the sea The Brussels Mennonite Fellowship is hosting its vacation bible school this week. Monday's activities focused on under water creatures and creations. Above, group leader Desiree Johnston, left, and Hannah Silcock practise their shark act during a quick -thinking game where students had to mimic various aspects of the sea. (Denny scop photo) At the Branch By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 It was celebration time in Clinton on Sunday as Brussels friends went to raise a glass to 60 years of marriage. Former long-time Brusselites George and Pat Langlois welcomed family and friends to this milestone in their lives. Community - minded comes to mind when I think about Pat and George. Hands-on help was their way of supporting our village and the result is that many people were pleased to celebrate this anniversary. Being in the water was the best way to pass last week. High temperatures with some humidity made it a perfect week for us to have a holiday on Balsam Lake. A five - bedroom rental with water entry about eight feet from the patio door served our family well. With a fair bit of planning on the part of the employed, with Phil and Lauren in from Alberta, family came and went as their schedules allowed. Numbers moved from 10 to 16 by the day but for one 24-hour period we were all Volunteers sought for events By Jo -Ann McDonald It was a quiet weekend around the Brussels Legion Branch, which is nice for a change. We have some busy times ahead. The weather is sure hot, so who wants to cook? A nice bowl of homemade soup would be nice and the Branch has plenty of varieties of Sandra's Soup for a Cause. Part of the proceeds go to support Veterans. Drop in during regular Branch hours and peruse the choices. The fish fry crew was on duty on Tuesday at the arena. They fed the participants of the truck rodeo for the Huron County road supervisors. Just over 50 enjoyed the fish dinner provided along with all the fixin's and pie! Helping cook included Rick McDonald, Glenn Bridge, Barrie Currie, Norm Dobson, Jo -Ann McDonald, Mabel Glanville and Sharon Robbins. Good job folks! The paperwork is complete and tickets are ordered for the next round of Catch the Ace. Tickets should be available by the end of next week and the first draw will be Aug. 3. The minimum jackpot of $750 will be up for grabs on your $5 investment. Tickets will be available at the same businesses around Brussels including Brussels Bulk and Bargain, The Jam Jar, Turning Heads and Making Waves, the Brussels Legion and the Walton Inn in Walton. Watch for the signs to reappear! Volunteers for the food booth at the ball tournament are still needed. Comrades are encouraged to call and sign up for a shift today! Make the work load a little lighter for the everyone. Another weekend to keep some time free to help the Branch is Aug. 10 and 11. We have three functions booked and extra help will be needed. The first is the Ring of Fire: A Johnny Cash Experience concert. Food is going to be available so cooks will be needed, folks at the door, bartenders and set up and clean-up help as well. The Saturday has the Brussels Ambassador meal that requires some help and the fish fry crew is away to Blyth for an event. Call today to volunteer for something. Extra hands are needed and we appreciate all Comrades pitching in to help. We have cancelled the Saturday afternoon euchres for the rest of the summer. No new volunteers have stepped forward and the dedicated crew that works every other week needs a break. Euchre will return in September and we hope by then a couple of folks will add their names to the euchre committee. The catering crew was at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre on Saturday serving the luncheon for the memorial celebration of life for the late Murray Houston. There was an early crew of Sandra Josling, Mabel Glanville, Sharon Robbins, Jo -Ann McDonald, Judy Lee, Daisy Wong Schmidt and Mary Bradshaw to get everything ready. The afternoon shift of Lisa Glanville, Joan Smith and Catrina Josling did their part and the clean- up. The Branch extends their sympathy to the Houston/Watts families. Our sympathies are extended to the family of Shirley Taylor on her passing. She was a former member of the Branch and many will remember her and her husband Dave as regulars of the Branch. They ran the meat draws and horse races for many years. Following Dave's passing, Shirley moved to Walkerton to be closer to family. Our condolences to the family. Chris, Curt and Phil with their wives and their children from eight months to 19 years made for a very, very fine holiday. Mind you, the lake view from my bed, swimming not 10 feet away and meal planning not mine, heaven on earth I think. There's nothing like a snake swimming in water with girls to shatter the peace in the land, also good for many laughs and stories. Kamran and his team at JR's was at it again recently, this time sending over some pizza to the residents of Huronlea. They expressed their gratitude with a handwritten thank you note. This is Vacation Bible School week. Called Kid's Corner here, it's held at the Mennonite Church, led by the councillors from Camp Kintail with support by Brussels Ministerial. This is a week of stories, fun, friendship, music and crafts. It's a time to do something good, see how others act in the world and to learn from it, to see that we can all be unique but with respect and understanding we can live in harmony. A very good place to spend a few summer hours. Check out The Citizen's social media presence on Twitter and Facebook, or visit us online at www.northhuron.on.ca Enjoy these good old summer days.
