Warm weather aids growth in local wheat, corn fields

WALTON

It has been quite a week with the
unbearable heat and humidity and
then with temperatures dropping
down to a cool 12°C a couple of
nights. We just have to recall the
below -freezing temperatures
suffered through this past winter and
the snow, and remember, this too
will pass.
In the farming world, the hay is
being cut, for second cut and the
golden heads of the wheat are
ripening quite quickly. It will not be
long and harvest will start and the
roads will have lots of machinery on
them again. Some folks cannot
believe how the corn has grown. It is
over six feet in some areas of the
fields at our place. The farmer's
measuring stick for corn of knee
high by July 1 has certainly been
surpassed in the first eight days of
July!
Congratulations to Bill Spink, who

Dona Knight, giving the thumbs up, celebrated her 80th birthday with a hot air balloon ride
operated by her grandson Zan Freeman, shown inspecting the balloon rig. Knight, Freeman
and six other grandchildren and their special friends took to the sky on Saturday to mark the
big event. In order to enter the balloon, she had to lay in the basket while it was on its side,
which is part of the process in order to inflate the balloon. (Denny Scott photo)

were about 40 attending including
members and spouses and
a few extras go to enjoy
the show. It is reunion
time for many and we held
the 57th Beuerman
reunion at the Brodhagen
Hall on Sunday. The
McDonald family hosted
this year's reunion with 44
in attendance. We enjoyed
a potluck meal at noon and
then the adults had the
"business" portion of the
day, including table
games, short family
reports and visits. The
children were outside
enjoying a great
playground and organized
games for awhile. A
family picture of all was
taken before everyone left.
A good time and visit with
all.
A gathering or reunion
of sorts was held at the
Walton Inn for some good
old friends. The six school
chums, some starting
from public school and
adding some during high
school, plus three spouses
gathered for lunch. They
had a great visit with lots
of laughter coming from
around the table. Enjoying
time together were the
instigator Margaret
Mclnroy and her husband

McClure, Mary Searle Pennington,
Ray McNichol and Bob Hulley and
Janet. Most of the group is now
retired so they can have more
gatherings!
The Glanville family reunion was
held at the Winthrop Ball Park on
Sunday. They had about 60 in
attendance and "president" Lisa
Glanville retains her position for
another year. They enjoyed games
throughout the afternoon and then
had a potluck supper. A new game
they played was done with decks of
cards and mystery prizes. Everyone
gets a card and then another deck of
cards is shuffled and a card drawn.
As the gifts are gradually taken, the
next round is stealing the gifts until
the last card is drawn and whoever
has a gift gets to keep it! They had a
lot of fun and laughs! An idea for
your next reunion!
Celebrating her 80th birthday in
style was Dona Knight. The family
gathered at Cowbell Brewing Co. for
a birthday dinner, about 15 enjoyed
a meal. Then seven of them went for
a hot air balloon ride. Grandson Zan,
who has the hot air balloon business,
was joined by birthday girl Grandma
Dona and other grandchildren
Brianne, Nicole and boyfriend and
Mark and girlfriend. You could say
Dona was flying high for her
birthday!
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were Ralph Bos, Dianne Blake,
Lorne Glanville, Brad Knight, Jim
Brown, Allan Carter, Emily Mitchell,
Sean Mitchell, Jasmin Roth, Russell
Pryce, Steve Fritz, Mitchell Ryan,
Lorna Fraser and Neil Mitchell.
Happy birthday to all.

There were a lot of tired Brussels
folks on Wednesday and Thursday
mornings this past week as they had
late nights. The Shania Twain
concerts in London on Tuesday and
Wednesday evenings, brought many
of our local folks there. The concert
opened with music by Bastian Baker
from Switzerland for about 35
minutes and then Shania performed
for an hour and a half and then came
back out for a 10 -minute encore. It
was a great show with dancers, great
musicians, lights, moving stage
scenery and sets, six costume
changes, flying trapeze, crowd
interaction and a fantastic show.
Rick and I received our tickets for
Christmas and the first Brussels area
folks we ran into were Lisa
Glanville, Joan Smith and Sharon
Rapson, Kim Smith, Wayne Smith
and two significant others. We made
it to our seats and there two rows and
one seat over were Joe and Deb
Seili! John Lowe reports that he,
Murray and Ruth, and Aunt Kathy
and Keith were in the front row for
the concert. Patricia, Kaitlin and
Krista McKay were there, Greg and

We welcome Grace Jutzi to
Huronlea Home for the Aged. We
hope she enjoys seeing some of her
old Brussels friends and settles into
her surroundings. Welcome to
Huronlea.
We can report that Alice Searle is
now residing at Huronview. She
looks forward to seeing some of her
old Walton friends when over that
way. Alice and her late husband
Allan farmed near Walton until
retiring off the farm to Goderich.
Welcome to Huronview.
Jim Knight is now at the Seaforth
Manor. He is doing physiotherapy to
help improve his condition and we
wish him well and continued
improvement.
Condolences offered
on Houston's passing
It is with great sadness to hear of
the passing of Murray Houston. Our
sympathies are extended to his
children Jillian and husband Chris
and Darryl and wife Jodi. His two
precious grandsons Emmett and Eli
will miss their grandfather's big
smile and gentle heart. Murray was
loved by his siblings, Bob, Glenna
and Janice and families and the
extended Watts family. Murray was a
quiet and home -loving man. He
loved his sports and was an avid
broomball player for the Dumper
team and a baseball player through
Walton minor sports and then the
Walton Brewers team for many
years. Many good times were had
together during those years of ball
games and tournament play. He
coached hockey and supported his
children throughout their sports
endeavours as a cheering fan. A
farmer through and through, he
loved the land, cutting grass and
animals. Our condolences to all.
