Hullett's Barnett retires after 30 years teaching music At the end of her high school education and facing a career decision, Susan Barnett waffled for a time between teaching or the ministry. However her musical talent won out and she worked toward a degree in music. So for 30 years she has been instilling the joy of music in young people in the Avon Maitland District School Board. Twenty-nine of those years were with elementary children and for 20 of them our community was fortunate to have her at Hullett Central Public School. Susan began her teaching career with a Grade 7 class in Goderich and also served as principal of Clinton Public School for a time. One year she taught OAC when a teacher took a sabbatical. Private piano students in the evenings have also been a part of Sue's music sharings. At Hullett, Susan's days were split between teaching music and language or special education. The choirs — both junior and senior — have been part of her curriculum when interest was evident. One day a week before classes began she worked with the school band. She mentioned that Hullett is fortunate to have band instruments as some Bringing the heat The Londesborough Legends took on the Seaforth Wolverines in Squirt baseball action on July 5 in Londesborough. The Legends lived up to their names, posting a 5-2 win over the squad's competition despite some brief bouts of wet weather. (Dennyscottphoto) UCW seeking quilt supplies With all the hot and humid weather of early summer, staying inside with the air conditioning can seem like a good choice. If you are looking for things to do inside I have a suggestion. The Londesborough UCW has been asked to put together some small quilts for a social agency in the area. These will be tied quilts of a twin bed or lap size. So we are looking for donations of fabric suitable for this project. Perhaps you could check your closets, etc. on an indoor day; you might have some fabric we could use. For more information, call me at 519-523-4296 or drop your donations at the church. The instruments are the result of fundraising and successful grant applications. A most memorable music teaching event for Susan came in the spring of 2016 when Hullett presented an operetta on the stage of the Blyth Festival at Memorial Hall. Mrs. Barnett retired from full-time teaching at the end of June. However, she told me that she will be teaching 30 piano students now in the daytime in two different schools — one of them is Hullett. She will continue to be the conductor of the Lakeshore United Church senior choir. Doesn't sound like retirement, although she is looking forward to doing more reading and is rewarding herself with an Alaskan cruise. Back to the beginning; her second career choice is also coming to fruition. Over the past seven years Susan has been taking theology courses one weekend every month at Five Oaks and has begun a lay ministry career. As our area is aware she has been supplying in pulpits when needed. The Hullett/Londesborough FROM LONDESBORO community thanks you, Susan, for your years of service, congratulates you on your retirement and wishes you well in your future endeavours. I believe the only other change for staff at Hullett sees Mrs. Cathy Goetz moving on. More details about staff will be available come September. gave , ?Zea , 4ddc pt?
