Eyes on the ball
While the fields may be dry, hot and brown thanks to a
complete lack of rain in recent weeks, that hasn't stopped
locals from taking to them for baseball and soccer and
everything in between. Perhaps it's memories of cold,
snowy conditions not that long ago that have been
motivating residents to be outside as much as they can. On
Wednesday night it was at the Sparling Fields just south of
Blyth that the local U18 Girls took on their counterparts
from Goderich. Unfortunately for the home team, the visitors put
five goals past Blyth's goalkeeper while the Goderich goalkeeper
kept a clean sheet for a 5-0 shutout, handing Blyth the loss. The
team is still in search of its first win this season. (Denny Scott photo)
Municipal election continues to take shape
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
With municipal election
nominations set to close in the
coming weeks, several locals have
been putting their names forward for
local council positions.
In Huron East, Zoey Onn has
joined incumbents David Blaney and
John Lowe running for two
councillors positions up for grabs in
the Brussels Ward of Huron East.
Bernie MacLellan has filed to
become the municipality's mayor
once again.
Current Deputy -Mayor Joe
Steffler is running to be a Seaforth
councillor. Huron East Council
recently eliminated the at -large
deputy -mayor position and decided,
after the election, to promote one of
the councillors to the position.
Current Tuckersmith Councillor
Ray Chartrand and McKillop
Councillor Brenda Dalton have both
filed for their positions for another
term. This is in addition to
newcomer Curtis McKinnon, who
has filed to run as a councillor in the
Grey Ward. Incumbent Seaforth
Councillor Bob Fisher is also
looking to fill his position once
again.
In Morris-Turnberry, current
Councillor Jamie Heifer has put his
name forward in hopes of becoming
the municipality's next mayor.
At council's June 5 meeting,
Mayor Paul Gowing announced that
he would not be running for re-
election, after two terms as mayor
and several years as a councillor
before that.
Incumbent Councillors Dorothy
Kelly, Jim Nelemans and Sharen
Zinn have all filed for councillor

Former Blyth Ward Councillor
Bill Knott's resignation has left
North Huron Council scrambling for
a replacement.
Typically, with a resignation so
close to the election, a seat can be
left open, however Knott's
resignation came 22 days before that
90 -day window opened, meaning
council needs to select a
replacement for the final four
months of the term.
Reeve Neil Vincent explained
during council's Monday night
meeting that while it was mandated
a replacement be found, the method
through which council can do so is
left undefined.
Working towards a resolution,
Vincent had contacted an individual
who he thought would be ideal to
fill the position.
Vincent said that, through
selecting an individual, council
could save the time and cost of a by-
election or a lengthy interview
process.
The individual, who wished to
remain anonymous until council was
ready to pass a motion making their
appointment official, has significant
experience in municipal politics,
according to Vincent. The person
also is a Blyth resident who has no
intention of running in the coming
election.
Vincent said he would identify the
individual during the closed -to -the -
public session at the end of Monday
night's meeting.
While Deputy -Reeve James
Campbell had asked how to proceed
with the selection (a process that
would take two more meetings, or
six weeks, to come to fruition),
Wingham Ward representative
