Robinson looks to Seuss for graduation address Emma Schmidt, Jackson MacDonald -Inglis & Maya Robinson F.E. Madill School 2018 Class Speakers Jackson MacDonald -Inglis Good evening everyone. My name is Jackson MacDonald -Inglis and I am your Grade 8A representative tonight. Did you know fear of public speaking is called Glossophobia? And the fear of death is Necrophobia? You wouldn't think so, but more people are affected by the first. Jerry Seinfeld once said that an average person at a funeral prefers to be in the casket than doing the eulogy. First of all I'd like to thank everyone who could attend the graduation tonight. It means a lot to all the graduates. This past year, being a part of the Grade 8A class was a blast, especially during gym class, isn't that right Ms. Martyn? This year everyone strived to do their best, both academically and athletically, and without them I wouldn't be the same person I am today. During the school year our class has grown together and created bonds and friendships with people some of us barely knew the year before. Over the last year, the comfort level has just skyrocketed. With everyone participating in extracurricular activities like sports, band and student council. All year you would hear us say "I can't wait for summer," and now that summer's here, we look back and wonder where our year went. It feels like just last month we were sitting in this very gym waiting for our names to be called by a homeroom teacher. Now I would like to take a moment to recognize our parents. We are so lucky to have you in our corner, no matter what. You're always there whenever we need you. Thanks to our coaches, for pushing us to our best and teaching us the importance of sportsmanship. And thanks to our Educational Assistants (EAs) for being the extra support we need in our classrooms. Even though I'm going to miss every one of my classmates, I wish you all the best of luck in Grade 9 and I hope everyone has a amazing summer. And now that the year is coming to an end, don't be sad, because like Dr. Seuss said, "don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." Emma Schmidt My name is Emma Schmidt and I am speaking on behalf of the Grade 8B class. This year, being in the Grade 8B class felt more like being a part of a family, instead of a class. This year went by really fast! It feels like just yesterday when we found out who our teachers and classmates were. And throughout the year we have really grown together. The Grade 8B class was always participating and trying their hardest and because of this, it helped us get to where we are today. It helped that we were all comfortable with each other and knew we had the support of our classmates. As a class, we have definitely grown. We have learned to be more mature and responsible. We were taught this by our teachers, but also learned and helped one another. This year we had a great team of teachers and EAs. This includes Mr. Westra, Ms. Atkinson, Ms. Martyn, Mr. Hallman, Mr. Prout, Mrs. Tinsley, Mrs. Battrom, Mrs. Dery, Mrs. Hammer, Mrs. Mulvey and Mrs. Feldscove. We really appreciate your help and support this past school year and we couldn't have done it without you! Your continued support was appreciated. This past school year, I was part of the student council. This was an amazing experience! I was able to help our school and provide fun events and activities. On student council, we made spirit days. For example, we created twin day and purple and white day. This really helped me grow. I was taught responsibility skills because I had to help organize things. They were involved with creating school events, helping to keep score at sports events, running errands for staff, and working as a team to accomplish our classroom work. It is great to see our growth and maturity. Maya Robinson "Congratulations, today is your day, you're off to great places, you're off and away." When it comes to our future, no one can say it better than Dr. Seuss. Good evening graduates, parents, guardians, friends and family. It looks amazing in here tonight. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make all of this happen, including the decorating and food committees. My name is Maya Robinson and I am speaking to you on behalf of the Grade 8C class. "Only one person in a million becomes enlightened without a teacher's help." That is a famous quote, which I believe relates to our elementary education, we couldn't have done what we have done if it wasn't for our Grade 8 teachers. We wouldn't know what we know or be here at this very moment, if it wasn't for teachers and EAs. And of course we can't forget about our very first teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 7, our parents, for guiding us, supporting us, driving us and putting up with us. So let's hear it for our teachers, EAs, support staff and our parents who have helped us and taught us along the way. It feels like just yesterday that we were coming to F.E. Madill to start Grade 7. I can still remember how anxious and nervous we were on the first day. But just look at how far we've come since then! And now, Grade 8 students, we finally did it, and tonight's the big night. So, congratulations. This year, being a part of the Grade 8C class was quite the experience! We always found a way in every class to have fun, although it wasn't always a fair bargain for the teachers... sorry about that. Although we may have made some mistakes along the way, we laughed at them, we learned from them and we corrected them. That is what the Grade 8C class was all about! Besides receiving our education, we were also lucky enough to be able to experience a wide variety of extracurricular activities thanks to the dedication and commitment of our teachers. Whatever your interests or skills, there was something for you to learn. We learned to work together as teammates and push ourselves to be the best we can be. These are great skills we can take with us into our high school years and our lives beyond. This past year, the Grade 8 classes took a trip to Camp Celtic up in Lion's Head, which was most of the students' favourite part of their final year in elementary school, hands down. We had a jam-packed and busy four days, playing all sorts of sports and doing outdoor activities. We sure had quite the week and learned some songs that we have been singing for the past month. But most of all, we all learned that we can survive without our phones and devices for a few days, which is a good experience for all of us. Camp Celtic also benefitted many of us by making us try new things that we may have considered to be outside of our comfort zone. That's what you should take away from tonight: in high school, step outside of your comfort zone and challenge yourself. Embrace the endless opportunities and perhaps discover strengths and interests you didn't know you have. Because the school year is done, I want to wish everyone an awesome summer and good luck to everyone in Grade 9! And as Dr. Seuss wrote, "You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself, any direction you choose. You're on your own and you know what you know, and YOU are the person who will decide where to go " Thank you. Your Local Paper - The Original Social Media!
