Boersma looks back on the chapters of school life
Kerina Boersma
Huron Christian School
2018 Valedictorian
By Kerina Boersma
Once upon a time in a school that's
not too far away, there was a class of
19 students. They've waited 10 years
for this moment and they feel as if
they can't wait any longer. Although
some may be nervous, at least they
know who's written this very
moment of their stories. As they
graduate tonight, they recall all the
chapters that led to this
moment.
The story of the class of 2018
started with the prologue, where we
had Mrs. Soer. Though she may have
seemed a little scary at first, by the
end, we were all looking up to her,
both because of her height and
because we loved her.
Our prologue will always be
remembered by the time when there
was a mouse in Sean's blanket. Half
of us were on our chairs screaming,
and the other half was trying to catch
it! We all checked our blankets very
carefully at nap time after that.
In the first chapter, we had Mrs.
VanWyk. This chapter was full of
fun, like when we did the Mexican
Market and traded anything we
didn't want. I bet our moms were
pretty happy to get rid of some of
our old junk, that is, until we came
home with even more.
In chapter two, not everyone in our
class had the same teacher. We had a
split class with seven of us joining
Mr. Huls while the rest of us stayed
with Mrs. VanWyk. Although we
didn't get to do much together in
class, we still got to play with each
other on the playground on both the
bee -infested monkey bars and the
dented beehive.
Chapter three was full of
chocolate bars, lemon drops,
crackers, and carrots because Mr.
Huls would give us a treat every time
he forgot our names and that
happened a lot. Although he claimed
that all the carrots he ate helped his
eyesight, he still couldn't tell Julia
from Maria.
In this chapter we learned our
times table thanks to Mr. Huls'
ancient songs. He would pop in the
record and we would all wait for the
"eight" song so we could yell 96 (da-
da -da).
In chapter four we had not one, not
two, but three main teachers. It
started off with Mrs. DeJager and
Mrs. Heykoop. Then, when Mrs.
Heykoop had her baby, we got Mrs.
Dykstra.
Even though we had a lot of
teachers, it was a good year, that is,
except for when half of us got sick
from eating Turkish Delight.
Chapter five will forever be
remembered as our "minion
chapter." With Mrs. Vogel, who
loved minions, we made and
published a minion magazine which
included interviews with a minion,
minion language and jokes that
minions would like. Hey, do you
know why the banana factory shut
down? It's because they threw out all
the bent bananas.
In chapter six, Mr. DeBoer led us
to become the kings and queens of
pranking. We played the ultimate
prank, the prank of all pranks, on the
Grade 1 class. We waited until they
were out of the school, then
everyone grabbed a desk and went
outside. We trudged back and forth,
back and forth bringing their
classroom outside. Needless to say,
the Grade 1 students had to have
their class outside for the rest of the
day.
In chapter seven, we had Mrs.
Scott. It was in this chapter that we
went to Niagara Falls. That trip will
always be remembered because of
the Mirror Maze, Fear Factory and
the ferris wheel that Leigha
hyperventilated on because she
thought she was going to miss the
bus and be left behind.
This chapter was full of drama and
excitement because it also included
the time when Luke shot a pen
through a window on the Exeter bus,
just millimetres away from my face!
And finally our story is at chapter
eight, the chapter that we are
concluding tonight. We have had
Mrs. Scott again this chapter. I'm
surprised she wanted us again, but
hey, we are a pretty great class even
if we misbehave from time to time.
Mr. V, I'm sure Jared and Owen are
very sorry that they set the fog
machine off in the middle of band
class. Even if they aren't sorry, then
at least we had some laughs I think
everyone can agree that this chapter
was one of the best!
Our class is full of many
characters all with unique
personalities and talents. Although
we may not have gotten along all the
time, we have all played a big role in
each other's stories.
There's Ethan, who is constantly
being told to put his clipboard that's
full of drawings away.
There's Jared, who can usually be
found talking about snowmobiles
and dirt bikes.
Katelyn, who loves all dogs, but
especially her polar bear of a dog,
Bailey.
There's Olivia and Brooke, who
both have a love for hockey, even if
they butt heads about their favourite
teams. Liv's a Habs fan. Go Habs
go! But Brooke's a Leafs fan. Boo!
Luke's short legs can carry him a
long way, which he shows when he's
flying through the air, doing running
triple jump.
A smile can almost always be
found on Kirsten's face, as she's
probably laughing at a joke.
There's Anneka who loves reading
and always supplied the Grade 8
girls with elastics.
There's Owen, whose desk
continues to be a black hole.
There's Zoe, who, with her over-
active imagination, always wonders
what will come next in life.
Leigha has a very distinctive laugh
that you can recognize even if you
hear it down the hallway.
There's Maria, who has a love for
animals She always has a story
about her pony, goats, dog, cats,
parrot, budgies, bunnies, chickens or
doves.
Nadine can usually be found with
her nose in a book, reading.
There's Sean, who has dreams
of one day running his dad's
business.
There's Noah, who can come
across as quiet, but I think that
everyone in our class can agree that
he's not.
Then there's Sam, whose hair is
perfect for the flow.
Levi, who is, like Olivia and
myself, a Montreal fan, much to the
dismay of Mr. G.
And last, but certainly not least,
there is Julia who always knows
what to say to put a smile on other's
faces.
Although the past 10 years have
been no walk in the park, they are
full of memories and people who are
unforgettable. Everyone that you
have encountered along the way has
helped shape you into the character
that you are today. All the
classmates, teachers and friends will
forever be part of your story.
In Psalm 139, it says that God has
every day of our lives written in his
book, even before they came to be.
God is the author of our stories. He
knows what will happen next in our
lives and to him there are no
cliffhangers. Whatever happens in
the future, know that it's in God's
hands. No matter what happens, the
author of your story will be looking
out for you.
While the chapters of our lives at
Huron Christian School may have
come to a close, they have taught us
how to love, respect and care for
others around us.
On behalf of my class, I would
like to thank all our parents,
teachers, and principals for playing a
part in our stories and shaping us
into the characters that we are now.
As we leave here today, I hope that
you will always remember the
chapters of your lives spent at here
and that they may help you through
the thick and thin of your future.
And the Huron Christian School
class of 2018 lived happily ever
after. That is, until high school
started.
