PEOPLE AROUND
WALTON

We hope everyone enjoyed the
long weekend and Canada Day! It
sure was a hot one and the crops are
loving the heat, but those who had to
work in it, not so much. Remember
to hydrate, take breaks and use
sunscreen!
It was a great time for school to be
over, before the blast of heat arrived.
Buses can be very hot to ride in, even
with the windows open. There were
lots of happy kids, drivers, teachers
and some parents. For other parents
it is a struggle to keep kids occupied
and busy during the summer and to
find child care. The two months will
fly by for all and before you know it,
we will be back. Congrats to our
local Walton students who graduated
from Grade 8 and will start their
high school years. Luke Fritz,
Bennett Smith, Shawna Terpstra,
Katrina Gubelmann and Matthew
McKee are the ones I know.
We also have students graduating
from high school and heading to
college or university or working.
Some of those students include
Emma Baan, Sarah Mitchell, Teagan
McGavin, Ben Robinson, Mitchell
McKee and Brett Stevenson.
Congratulations to all the grads and
good luck.
There are also those graduating
from university and one would be
Ryan Baan. He has graduated from
Carlton University with his Bachelor
of Commerce and is working in
Ottawa with 4-H Canada.
Congratulations to Ryan!
The campers on the weekend
report the swimming pools were
overflowing with action trying to
keep kids cool, but they had lots of
fun. Thankfully, there was a nice
breeze blowing most of the hot days.
Congratulations to Missy and Paul
Turner on the birth of a daughter,
Posey Raine. She is another
grandchild for Pam and Alvin
McLellan and the fourth child for
Missy and Paul of Wellesley.
We are hoping Jim Knight is
coming along after suffering a health
issue last week. He has been in
Stratford Hospital and we hope he is
improving.
We are pleased to hear Steve Fritz
is home and is improving. It will be
slow going and his smashed ankle
will take time to heal, so getting
around is tricky. Fast healing
thoughts to Steve!
The International Lions student
exchange has students coming to our
area and some going from our area.
Arriving here to the home of Perry
and Julie Pearce in Brussels are two
17 -year-old young men. David
Gomez of Mexico and Oskari
Marjakoskic of Finland have been
here a week already. They will be
going to the Lions Camp, south of
Goderich, for a week and then will
return to their host family for the
remainder of their time here. They
will be here a month and have
already enjoyed a barbecue to meet a
few folks around Brussels.
Returning from a fantastic trip
with her family is Sheila Prescott.
Six family members flew from
Toronto to Ireland for 10 days.
David, Mark, Paul, Daryl and Marci
joined Sheila on the trip. They spent
four days in Dublin seeing the sights
in southern Ireland and then
travelled north to the Belfast area of
Ireland. It is in Northern Ireland
where Sheila's parents grew up and
they toured the area and even met
some relatives. They toured the west
coast from the top of Ireland to the
bottom and it was beautiful.
They went on double-decker buses
and were able to get on and off
whenever to look around an area.

order the food needed.
The fish fry crew went to
Lucknow to celebrate Canada Day
and the Lucknow Reunion on
Sunday.
They cooked for 300 folks in the
heat, but managed to have a good
time while doing the job. They were
at the Lucknow Legion and
appreciated their hospitality and
help. Comrades Eric and Deb Ross,
Mabel Glanville, Ron and Daisy
Schmidt, Judy Lee and Jo -Ann
McDonald were on the job for the
Branch.
They went to the Bushmill's
Distillery, the oldest one in Ireland,
where they still make their product
the same way as in the past. They
toured some castles and went to the
dock and the exhibit of where the
Titanic was built.
It was a marvellous trip and they
met some very interesting people.
Wherever they went, they enjoyed
excellent food in the small bars and
taverns, and offers of how the locals
could help them. They rented a van
to tour around Dublin and Belfast
and report that the hay was off, grain
turning yellow, flowers blooming
everywhere, and sheep grazing
everywhere, but not on the road.
They went to the giant causeway
and enjoyed great weather and only
one rainy night. It was a fantastic
trip, leaving them all wanting to go
back. We all know it is a small world
and on the flight home from Dublin
were folks on a Hanover Holidays
tour. Sheila met a classmate from
Wingham High School whom she
had not seen since graduating and
when saying she was from Brussels,
Stew Taylor, from Exeter, joined in
to say he comes to Brussels for the
Sunday Night dances at the Legion
all the time. Welcome back to
Sheila!
Walton native Jeff Linton made
the front cover of The Rural Voice
this past issue. He is a young farmer
entrepreneur with his pasture pork
business. Raising pigs outside is an
unusual and unique concept and a
challenging one, but Jeff is working
hard at making it a success. It is a
good story about Jeff and a copy of
The Rural Voice can be found at The
Citizen offices.
Welcome back to Deb Cann who
enjoyed a 10 -day trip to British
Columbia. She went to visit a sister
and her family with one of her
nieces. They went to Chilliwack to
stay and travelled around to see the
sights. They attended a baby shower
for a new great-niece and saw many
of the extended family in the area.
They went to Stanley Park, which is
beautiful, and Deb reports an
interesting fact. After a large storm
damaged many of the giant trees in
the park, they took them down, and
made benches and sitting areas from
the wood. Good thinking!
Deb enjoyed the scenery of the
area, but is not a fan of flying, so her
view of the mountains from the
plane was minimal, she just didn't
look out the window.
Deb also had an interesting story
about her niece and her wedding
dress. The bridal shop left many
brides without a dress when they
closed shop unexpectedly. The word
travelled somehow to the host of the
TV show "Say Yes to the Dress" and
the host flew an assortment of
dresses to that area and supplied
FROM WALTON
them to the brides, at no charge!
What a wonderful thing to do and it
goes to show there are still some
generous people out there. Deb
had a wonderful time and would love
to go again, but wonders if taking the
train would be nice! Welcome back
Deb.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week include Nora Humphries,
Stephen Todd, Norah Schlosser, Ken
McCallum, Sandy Rijkhoff Terpstra,
Kevin Huether and Caden Lee to end
June. Canada Day babies include
Linkin McCallum, Julie Wharton,
Colton Van Driel and Jim Bosman,
followed by Dianne Baan, Sherri
Taylor, Craig Baan, Merton
Hackwell, Jeffrey Linton, Ken
Pethick, Mike Ryan, Hope
Williamson and Allison Stevenson.
