PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 5, 2018. Shop local The Brussels Farmers' Market, now held in the lower hall of the Brussels Four Winds Barn, provides shelter from both the unforgiving hot sun and wet rain, as well as a chance to support local producers. Held Fridays from 2-6 p.m. until mid-October, the market has continued to grow weekly since opening in May, according to organizer Kathy Stephenson. (DennyScottphoto) McArters to thank for meals A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Summer is officially here. The humidity has arrived and the kids are out of school. Let the fun begin. As kids pass through the various grades, it's fun to watch their view on friendship and what it takes to remain one. Listening to the gatherings that were planned as school came to a close for another year was educating. As much as groups of friends are important, so are the individuals. Hearing what was happening in the life of the teen and pre -teen grandgirls was very reassuring for the future of friendships. As maturing people, they see that life gets complicated and if friendships are to be, firm plans are made to be sure the connections are firm. So food and fun were part of each plan as separation for the summer was realized. A wee bit of jealousy on my part as I listened to the impending fun time for the girls. So, for the adults, a good reminder that friendship need connection to survive. The advantage of keeping friends from each stage of your life is the share memories of your growing up years, not always flattering or part of your memory. So celebrate the long-term friendships in your life and nurture the new as they arrive. Summer fun is a given. Your choice is where you want your energy spent. The shows in our area are getting good reviews, so don't miss the opportunity to see quality theatre only a short drive away — Blyth of course, with Drayton, Grand Bend and Stratford all offering a good summer outing. It's strawberry time! These wee sweeties bring with them good memories of my grandpa — Will Jenkins. From Blyth stock, my memories are of him at Water Street in Galt. He worked at a farm that supplied produce for the market there. While I was on holiday with him and grandma, he would bring home these large, sweet, wonderful berries to be savoured. Sometimes I could go to work with him, I remember a huge field where he hoed. I was nearby in the berry patch where I could earn an nickel for each box of berries I picked. The money part of the memory has faded but the taste and the feeling are revived every summer. When something happens in community, we see the faces at the front and sometimes forget that it takes many people to make things happen. You can all think of events or causes that just wouldn't exist if a whole team wasn't working together. Soup&More 2 is my thought this week. Several times a At the Branch summer a barbecue is enjoyed and one of the details that silently occurs, Murray and Gayle McArter are the chefs of the day, making the barbecued meal a summer treat. Thanks Murray and Gayle. Happy 151st Canada! We are so blessed with so many things, it's hard to even start. Take a moment and name your top five reasons for being a proud Canadian Enjoy the heat of the summer. Bye now, Betty G.W. Farmers' Market a continuing success By Denny Scott The Citizen The Brussels Farmers' Market continues to grow according to organizer Kathy Stephenson. The market, which runs Friday afternoons on the lower level of the Brussels Four Winds Barn, is the spiritual successor to the market which ran for several years on Brussels' main street. Stephenson said that vendors are reporting more foot traffic and better sales than they had at the previous location. "I think the expectations have been met," she said. "[Barn owner Bryan Moton] thought we might have bigger crowds and every week we have more people and have more than the other market did. The vendors are pleased with their sales, even on slower weeks, they are doing very well." Stephenson, in previous interviews, said that the market, which runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Friday until mid-October, is hitting higher numbers in the last hour of the day than expected. She said there is a surge of visitors that the other market didn't seem to experience, according to the vendors. The market features fresh produce, locally -made items and a designated hot food vendor as well as entertainment, which Stephenson Branch welcomes new member By Jo -Ann McDonald The week at the Brussels Legion Branch began with the first general meeting of the new term, but the last for the summer. They will be willing to assist with the project. Comrades Josling and Mitchell have their information ready to send to the company and the Branch will soon have some on display. More information will follow on the project soon. The new coolers are here and will have to have some wiring done and installed where they are going.
