Not a Leap -Year In answer to the question asked by a correspondent, it may be said that the reason 1900 is not a leap year is that, according to the Gregorian calen- dar, all centurial years that aro not muntiples of 400 are not to be made leap years. Dishonest Packers - The Ontario Fruit Growers Assoc- iation is after the dishonest packers. Were Miss Cooke to return to Lucknow on some future occasion as she is likely to do, a well packed house is assured. Mr. David McGill, of Blyth, performed a most enjoyable part of the programme, as songster, and added grealty to the interest of the evening's proceedings. Mr. McGill is a born singer, possess- ing a rich, full and powerful voice. His selections were listened to with rapt attention. His rendition receiv ed well, deserved enohore. He has a more than local reputation as a singer of high order, which was well su.tain- ed on Friday evening. M. s. P. P. Kee acted as piano accompanist with much acceptance. Mr. S. The evening being spent in music, readings and games, etc. The young ladies have secured the Hall in order to give an evening's entertain- ment to the young people or all who care to attend. At Homes will be given the first Thursday of every month, and all who wish to spend a pleasant evening aro invited to attend. Fraud in Packing Some startling statements were made by Prof. Robertson at the meeting of the Fruit Growers' Association, held in Whitby last 2week—statmont3 which show that dishonesty in fruit - pecking is on the increase, rather than otherwise. One case was referred to in particular. A barrel siupposed to contian Pippins, was found to have a couple of rows of Pippins at each end, while the centre was filled with stock only suitable for cider. This was not, unfortunately, by any means an isolat- ed case. The Government have had officials during the present shipping season at St. John, Montreal and Hali- fax, simply for the purpose of keeping tab on the character of the shippments made, and the reports of these officers show that at least GO per cent. of the The By -Elections The four by-elections to the Ontario Legislature took place in South On- tario, South Brant, and East and West Elgin on Tuesday last, and resulted in two Reformers and two Conservatives being returned. In South Ontario the Hon. John Dryden, was elected by 352 majority, and in South Brant another Liberal, Mr. T. R. Preston, was returned by 439 majority. in East Elgin, Mr. Brower, the Conserva- tive candidate was elected by 58 majority, and in West Elgin, Mr, Mc- Dairmid, the Conservative Candidata defeated Mr. D. McNish by 21 majority. z Duck and Tnrkey Stealing The parties who have been feeding on Mrs. Henderson's ducks all the fall have done very well. as they took one the first time, and three the next, but the last time they struck a very poor night, for the snow was deep enough to trace their tracks the direction they went. There is a good deal of speculation as to who will be our Reeve for next year, and the names of Messrs. A. T. Davison and William Taylor are pro- minently mentioned for the office. Both these gentlemen have had several years experience at the Council Board. and either of them would make a good Chief Magistrate. Mr. William Allen's name is also freely mentioned for the Reeveship, ASHPIELD TOWNSHIP. Mr. John N. McKenzie having de- ci'ied to retire from municipal politics, the fight for the Reeveship of Ashfield, will he between Messrs. Morgan Dal- ton and William Kickley. For Coun- cillors the names of Messrs. William Hunter, John Bartley, John McIntyre and Thos. Stobhere, are prominently mentioned. KINLOSS TOWNSHIP. The retirement of Mr. George Moffat from the Reeveship of &inloss will cause a vacancy in that Council, but it is more than probable that Mr. Frank Henery will be elected Reeve without opposition. IWEST WAWAl'tOSH. There is little or no stir in the muflioipal affairs of the township this year, and a prominent resident inform- ed us on Saturday last that it was altogether likely the present Uouncil would be returned by acclatnation. Greenway Defeated The general elections in the Provin- ce of Manitoba on Thursday last, resulted in a defeat of the Reform Greenway Government. There are forty constituencies in the Province and the latest returns from the elect- ions show that the Conservatives have carried 21 seats; the Reformers 16, and .the Independents 1. In the lest House the Greenway Government had 34 of the 40 seats, so that a tremen- dous turnover must hare taken place in the Province. It is said that the Government's railway policy, was the chief cause against the Reform party. The two elections in Dauphin and Gimill will be held this weeks the one constituency beim inhabited chiefly by crofters and the other by Icelanders. A Pretty Wedding A yery pretty but quiet wedding took place in the ventral Presbyterian church, on Wednesday, 6th inst., the contracting parties being, Miss Jennie McIntosh, daughter of Mrs. Agnes McIntosh, of Lucknow, Ont., and Mr. Orel L. She was assisted by her sister, Miss. Isabel McIntosh, who was dressed in pink or- gandy and wore a black picture hat and carried white and pink carnations. The groom was supported by Mr. t'►.
