SIR.—I told the people of Lucknow
that I wouI,I toll them a little about
Vancouver. It is a eery tine city with:
large buildings mostly of stone auJ
brick. It is very bard to get a house
or store to rent. but you can get plenty
rooms which are very comfortable.
The only business in Vancouver is
wholesale houses, milling offices and
banks for they ruiners and mining
camps. There are no manufactories
at all. It comes from tbe east. There
is plenty of fruit, potatoos and cabbage
and all the t is grown in the garden.
I saw nothing like it at Lucknow fall
show. You can go into the garden and
get it now or any time and at the same
time you can see the snow in the
mountains, We are in the middle of
winter and Vauoouti er is full of people
from the mines in the mountains, but
they will all leave town after Christ-
mas. Everything is looking prosper-
ous and I thiuk when the rainy season
is over that things will boom. I wish
I had come here three years ago.
There is plenty of drinking and
gambling at all times, both night and
day. They are fined some times but the
miners are bound to keep at it.
Now I will tell of Sunday in Van-
couter. Trains run the same as on
any other day. ocean steamers load
and unload, lots of the people work on
Sunday and get drunk on Monday;
Contracts for houses are made on
Sunday, or anything that th,y wanted
to do. It is very different frorn
Ontario, and is more like New York
on Sunday. I have visited all Luck -
now friends and we received a warm
welcome, also our Hamilton friends
were glad to know we are in good
health. Mrs. Memory is getting real
strong.

Surprise party at McVllle. '
"Last Monday night while Mr. and
Mrs. McDougall wore enjoying a quiet
evening by theuaselves about 8 o'clock
-the neighbors began to drop in by
twos and threes and after enough had
gathered and Mr. and Mrs. McDou-
gall
cDou-
gall had recovered from their surprise
card playing was introduced, and while
in the m idLt of .in exciting game, Mr.
Jess Carr arrived and wished the at-
tention of the little party and in a few
well chosen words which were are fol-
lows: -Your friends and neighbors de-
sires to show our appreciation: of your
many kind acts toward us in the past,
and of your interest in the prosperity
and welfare of our cornunity, the enter -
prize you have shown in the face of
your recent loss by placing your con-
fidence with us and rebuilding prompt-
ly, thereby 'showing that your inter-
ests remain -with us. Therefore we
beg of you to accept this gift as a
token of our high esteem. At this he
handed Mr McDougall a package
containing four hundred and five dol-
lars. To say Mr. McDougall and his
estimable wife were burprist'd could
only be appreciated by those present, -
The balance of the. evening was spent
in a sociable way until about 12 o'clock
when a most refreshing lunch was
served, after which they took their
leave, all agreeing it to be one of the
most agreeable surprises they ever
attended.
CARD OF TIIANKS
Dear friends and neighbors we ac-

thanks and we assure you while we
appreciate your gift we prize your con-
fidence more highly, which we trust
we may continue to share in the future.
We assure you, friends and ueighbors,
that our interests are identical with
yours. Again thanking you for your
most unselfish gift we remain your
friends and neighbdrs.

CARD OF THANKS
To the E'litor of the Sentinel
DEAR SIR.—Will you kindly give
me space in your paper to thank you
and the public generally for the kind
ness which bas been shown myself and
family since the death of my dear
husband. His sickness only being a
few hours makes it all the harder to
bear, but as God called him away, he
also sent me hundreds of kind friends
in the time of need. Thanking you
again and the public generally fur the
kindness shown me.
I remain yours,
SUSAN JONES.
Holyrood, Dec. gat, 1899.
To'tlte Editor of the Sentinel
DEAR SIR --In our endeavor, as a
managing committee to try and do
something for Mrs. Jones and her fiv
small children, the eldest who is only
eleven years old and the youngest not
yet two months, we are proud to say -
we met witih a hearty response, which
is an evidence that we are living in a
Christian land, when we find the
people so benevolent in their contribu-
tion towards getting up a handsome
purse for her.
Itis likely there aro hundreds of
readers of The Sentinel, who do not
know anything in regard to the late
Mr: Jones. He was in the employ of
J. 11. Ackert and wag in his usual
health on Nov. 8th, he having worked
all day until six o'clock and just as
he wag about to sit down to his tea
tie was seized with inflarnation, and
the next day at twelve o'clock was a
corpse.
Mr. Aekert has be:;n employing men
for the last twenty one ori and it is
the first time any of them has been
called away. It was a sad sight to
see him borne to the grave by six of
his comrades, who were also employees
of Mr. Ackert. Now Mr. E litor if
there is any person who wishes to con
tribute anything toward rnakinl t,p
the purse for Mrs. Jones and her child
ren, any member of the managing com-
mittee wig: be pleased to receive thf'ir
offering, either :by )nail or personal,
which will be acknowledged in The
Sentinel, as well as all former gifts, in
scone issue in January. (Signed)
