PEAT AS FUEL
To the Editor of the Sehtinel.
DEAR SIIt,-I notice frequent refer-
ences in your columns to the. new
Peat Fuel'I''fnduatry, and with your
permission I would like tc say a few
words to °the residents of Lucknoty
and surrounding country. I ani
informed that the patentee is urging
the people of Wingham and Lucknow
to take hold of this thing. There is
a big bog near Whitechurch, part of
which is situated on my farm, con_
taining many thousand tons of this
article. A sample of it has been
tontiutt.

and pray that you may be long spared
to enjoy the many blessings promised
in this word of God. May its precepts
guide you and its promises cheer you
along through the journey of life, and
may the songs of Zion contained in
this hook of praise, ever bring you
nearer to God, and cause your mem-
ory once again to return to the happy
hours when we have mingled our voices
together in East Ashfield church, in
praise to flim who died for us.

analyzed and pronounced very good.
Now here is a chance for enterprising
men. 1 n the first place I would
recommend that a deputation be sent
out in the spring to see the deposit
and decide if there is enough of it to
warrant the enterprise. If there is,
then ascertain what it will cost per
ton to manufacture and plass' the
product on cars at Whitechurch.
• .nd lastly ascertain if the plant could
he removed to another locality, when
the deposit should be all utilized, if
such should be the case. These points
decided it should be all plain sailing.
This is an enterprise which would be
teorthy of Lucknow. here is an
opportunity to secure a fuel almost
equal to coal. A3 a labor producing
Enterprise it will be a success, provid-
ing remunerative employment for
quite a number of hands. This
deposit has the advantage of being
quite close to the railway, being only
100 rods distance in a direct line 11
miles froiu Whitechurch station.
Thanking you 'Mr. Editor for your

Easter Services
The special Raster services in the
Methodist church on Sunday last
were of an especially interesting
character. In the morning the pastor
preached a special sermon to the Sun-
day school children, and the front of
the church was nicely decorated with
beautiful flowers, while ir, the after-
noon a splended prograunme was
rendered by the school children and
others. In the evening a very fine
song service was given by the splendid
choir of the church, and the building
was filled to the doors with an ap-
preciative audience. The duet by
the Misses Leila Berry and M ass
Peart, and tho quartette by
R. Hughes, J. Smith and the Messrs.
Peart and Berry were; exceptionally
well rendered and much _appreciated.
The collections at all the services were
in aid of the Sunday school funds.

The Choose Situation.
The statistical position of cheese in
th.: British market is the strongest for
a number of years and this is owing to
the light snake last season and the
prices being low stimulating the
consumption. It is estimated that at
the present consumptive demand,
there will be a shortage of over
200,000 boxes of what will he required
to supply the _market until the new
cheese comes in. The large make of
cheese from 1894 to 1897 resulted in a
great number of boxes having to be
carried over from year to year causing
a lowering of prices. Last season
there was a light make and prices
stimulated, consumption cleaning the
market not only of last season's cheese
but also the surplus stock. So with
these facts before us we may look
forward for good prices for the coming
season.

Priees on Hardware Advancing
Owing to .the scarcity of raw
material everything of a metal
character ia advancieg in price.
During the short period of four
months, many lines have appreciated
from 75c to 100 per cent. in value.
Wire nails that were last year sold at
Wire fencing has advanced from $2.15
tos,$3.15 per coil. Gas pipe, White
Leads Coal Oil, and Turpentine have
all taken a sharp stride upward, and
from present indications are likely to
remain so for an indefinite period.
Ileretofore, prices have been so low
that the manufacturers were becoming
disheartened, and many of them, in
fact, closed down, while others have
departed from old lines into Trusts
and Corporations in order to ckrtail
expeeses. Since the break out of the
Spanish-American war, the great
powers of Europe have been strength-
ening their defences _on every hand,
employing thouaands of men, and
using tons upon tons of material. Our
American friends to the south, in
their struggle for supremecy in the
Phillipines, are playing no small part
in diverting men from their usual
vocations in the iron industry, and
are consumieg a considerable amount
of material which is needed for
ordinary purposes, and this, of course,
increases cost to producers. It will
'be nsany years before prices will again
be 144 low as they were.
