opinion, the hand -writing of the same
individual.
1H. S. (ilbert, hotel keeper, Paisley,
swore that he saw King daily during
last (etober. Noticed his absence
about the 1st November, and did not
see him again till ,)ec. 19th, when he
got of the bus from the late train at
his hotel.
Ezra Briggs, chief constable, testiited
that he arrested King at the Central
hotel, Paisley, Peninan and Stiefel,
the Chicago detectives, were with
him. Penman pointed out King as
White, who had ba -u in Rock Rapids
and cashed the f )rged draft. After
King had been brought to Walkerton
he took Briggs inside a side roein of
the Queen's Hotel and offered hini
$500 for the three of them, or COO
OO
for himself to give hint a chance to
escape. Witness refused and impris-
oned him in the lock-up. In the
morning when taking him out of the
lock-up he saw some chips on the floor
that had been cut out with a knife.
This concluded the case for the
prosecution and evidence was then led
for the defense. Mr. Klein argued
that no case had been made out, and
that, even if King were White it was
not proved that he knew the draft to
be forged, and that it was necessary to
prove his guilty kno*ledge before he
could t•e convicted This the judge
over -ruled, and a number of witnesses
were called for the defence. Mrs.
Flood, Mrs. King, Miss King, Robt.
Hay, Abr. Hunt, _Mrs. Kate Hunt
ind Wm. Meikelman agreed fairly
well in their testimony that King was
is Paisley on the night of tbe 31st
October and that consequently. ho
could not have been in Rock Rapids
on that date.
The next point to clear up was the
whereabouts of King on the 4th of
November to rebut the evidence of
the prosecution that he bad presented
a draft at Lester ►n Nov. 2nd and at
Ro.k Rapids on Nov• 3. It takes two
days to journey from Paisley to these
places and Montford Rush, George
Kin; and Cha.. Thompson swore that
they saw hien at Schwl<n's Hotel in
Hepworth on Nov. 4tb, white %V. H.
Knight, a notelkeeper at Parkhead,
tswore that he had seen him at Hep-
worth early in November but could
not 61" the enact date.
CAMR20/4111 PATSIIT PUMP.
Lucknow, Jan. 17th, 1899.
Mt. Jt,hn C'tm.r•in,
Luch►t--u, Ott.
DEAR Sta,-I feel it my duty to
acknowledge the superior and easy
working of the pump you put in my
livery barn last June l t498. I have
had many force pumps, out I may
say none of them ever gave we the
satisfaction yours has. In the wast-
ing of rigs it is simply indispensihl,'.
It works so easy that a boy of 5 years
old has pumped it to wash rigs, with
over 20 feet of hose attached. I can
do double the amount of work and
with not one half the exertion of any
other pump I ever had in. I wou'd
say to any livery man,- wishing a force
pump you cannot do bitter than get
one of Mr. Cameron's, as t am fully
convinced it will give you entire
satisfaction. I would not be without
one on any consideration.
Yours faithfully,
ALLAN MCLEOD.
