air of the Muskoka region. Immedi-
ate relief is the unfailing rule.
"In 136 4, an adventurous Canadian
boy with companions went up through
Lake Simcoe, overland to Gravenhurst,
—now a pla, o of over 2,000 inhabi-
tants with large lumber and manufao-
turing interests, then a hamlet of a
few houses and an Indian trading
point—and in an old sailing craft,
with her captain for guide, sailed
along and encamped nail they reached
the head of Lake J osepb. Nu white
Was were seen along the shores. The
Moron Indians held sway. It was
their happy pleasure preserve. The
Vicinity of Indian river between Lakes
Muskoka and Rosseau was their heat-
ing ground. The beauty of the ►+ur-
rouodirtgS charmed the young wail
Aad his friends and they made several
pilgrimages. Year by year the num-
ber of Indians decreased until at
present only a few are fouud at Bala.
The young man married and visited
the islands, the woods, the mountains
and the seashore. Nowhere did he
r.nd the refreshing. rough and rugged
life that so appealed to hiiu in his
earlier lays and so he returned to his
tree love in Lake Joseph, and that .is
host W. 13. MLMurrich, Q.C., of
Toronto, comes. to have. the choicest
.pubs in that beautiful lake. Illy his-
tory has been repeated l,y others
until now upwards of 1100,000 are
invested in retreats away from cards
of business or the noise of the city on
the islands in beautiful Muskoka
lak ee.
William Gregory -Allen acid his 11
children have a thrse island home in
Lake ROSSeau. •Mr. Gregory was left
a large land estate iu England by an
uncle on condition that he would take
he name of Allen. It was supposed
,y Mr. Gregory's friends that he
would goo -to England to spend the
remainder of his life, but after a few
months' stay be returned to the
Muskoka, saying that he could not
to content away from the scenes so
dear to him, scenes iiet duplicated, so
far as he could learn, in old world
countries. He has since avowed his
intention never to leave Muskoka.
•. The lakes are situated 80U feet
above sea level, 300 feet above Lake
Ontariv and over 200 feet above
Lake Superior. The air is dry, pure,
light, pine -laden, bracing, but not
over -exhilarating. Towns- - do not

• Mtjkoka's waters hold fish for
tboea who enjoy such sport, and her
woods ganie for the huntsman. Bass,
pickerel, and salmon abound in the
lakes se well as other lake fish, and
the trout streams in the interior give
up their beauties because they a re seldom
fished. There are tuuskalonge in the
