NOTES AND COMMENTS The annual report of the superintend- ent of Indian affairs shows that during the fisoal year ending last March the Indiana in Canada numbered 110,205, a decrease of 40. The preceeding report showed that the Indians in 1906.7 in- creased by 160. The falling off in Indian population last year is attributed to increased activity of tuberculosis. The report notes that the Indians gener- ally are becoming more self-reliant, and the expenditure for destitution, which amounted to $372,000 ten years ago, has decreased to $143,000. When the time for the filing of pro• testa in connection with the recent Federal election expired at 1 o'clock Saturday, but eight protests in Ontario in all had been entered, four by the Conservatives, and four by the Liberals. Protests against Liberals are West Peterboro, South Ontario, Welland and Ottawa (Sir Wilfrid Laurier's seat,) Against Conservatives—Nipisaing, North Lanark, Norfolk and Centre York. Taking all the provinces there are thirty-seven protests against Liberals and twenty-eight against Conservatives. The statement of public revenue and expenditure for the first eight montbe of the present fiscal year, as reported to the Finance Department up to the end o1 the month, shows a total revenue of $55,115,227, a total expenditure or consolidated fund account of $45,376,- 957, and a total expenditure on cap• ital account of $22,166,394. The great bulk of the latter was, of course, or the National Transcontinental Rail. way. As compared with the corre• sponding period of last year there is r decrease of $11,647,200 in revenue, at increase of $3,832,501 in expenditure on consolidated fund account, and at increase of $5,501,907 in capital ex in Dr. J.
