Thursday, the 3rd Inst, iR Dungannon cemetery, being escorted thither by a large cortege of bereaved relatives, sorruwiek:: friends, sympathizing neigh- bors anal acqueintances, that has been witnesee,l or known to the oldest settlers in this and surrounding count- ry, evinced the esteem and popularity in which the deceased Was held by so many. The cortege was composed of maw frow Goderich, Clinton, and Lucknow, as also from the townships of Mullett, 3exlerich, Ashtield, lilt and \'e.t Wawanosh, Colbourne, loss, and Iluron. There were upwards of 21C velueles in a line and the ob- sequies were conducted by the pastor Rev, K. l'airbourne, B..1., and Mr. Millard of the Nile, the pall -bearers being Hagh, James, Charles, his sons: David, his nephew; James McBride and Jos. bell, sons in-law. }lad the deceased livedea few more days he would have been an octogenarian hav- ing been born in 1819, in the county Down, Ireland. The deceased was, if we are correctly informed, the eldest pioneer of the township of West W aware sh having been a resident of it since 1841, at which time he took up the land which he occupied till his decease, about 56 years, and ,lurin.c which time he, being pvssesscd of a genial disposition, made• for' himself a host of friends. As a Citizen he was highly esteemed and was in consequence placed in the important poeition of Reeve of Wawa - nosh, which he held for 30 years, and while serving as s»eh was elected as Warden of ' the !county. He was a astice of the peace for nearly 50 years trustee of school section in which he lived for many years; President of the Wawanosh Mutual Fire Insurance Co, from its inception up to his decease, having attended ttie last meeting, apparently in good health; for many • years president of the Ashfiekl and 1VawanoshlAgricultural society, w hick offices he tilled with ability, and satisi- faction to those who placed him in the various seats of hohor. The congrega– tion of Erskine church have in his decease lost a good supporter, as he with hearty and liberl►l contributions to the support of ministrations in the church. He leaves to mourn his loss, three sons, Hugh , Ex reeve of eAshfield, Chas. and James on the homestead, Rachel only daughter, now Mrs. Mc- Bride, toweship .of Colbourn, all of whom are comfortably settled and in good circuwstancee; also one brgther Samuel, of Amherst Island, and one sister Mrs. Lindsay, of Lucknow, be- sides a number of erandcbidren.
