If things get rough he works. _ For one week he worked on construction outside Hamilton which kept him going for awhile. Lately he and his friend have been depending on friends for food. "I told some girls I was dying of scurvy so they gave me a dozen carrots which I ate on the spot," he said. Jerry said that quite a few girls had taken pity on him and his friend but the only problem was that all the girls get together at night at the Missing Piece coffee house where he usually hangs out. Jerry gets from place to place by hitch -hiking. "We've been picked up by every type of person from doctors to bums. People who pick you up tend to be more open with you when they talk to you because they figure they'll never see you again." Back home they wouldn't open up because they would think, "What will this guy think of us?" He said that rides were easy to get but the ease with which they are attained varies inversely with the length of one's hair. North Bay was the hardest place to get a hitch. Jerry and his friend spent over 24 hours trying to get a ride south. Their first big stop was Yorkville but the pair didn't stay long. A lot of these Yorkville people just pretend to be hippies and are actually making a fortune running an Underground paper or something. Then when they are rich they'll crash the place. "Then there is the weekend or nightly hippies who return to their $30,000 homes." During his summer trip Jerry has slept almost everywhere. The first night in Yorkville, they slept on the concrete in an underground parking lot. "We told the janitor that we wanted to sleep here because it was warm and he was nice enough to sweep right around us and not bother us." He's slept under cloverleaf by-passes along 401 and one night sacked out in a cemetery at Windsor. He met a fellow near Delhi who was moving to a new house and he let the Where People Are Persons Missing Piece Coffee House Daily Open 2 to 5 Nightly 8:30 to 12:30 page 1) lads sleep in his old one in exchange for helping him move. In Yorkville it was easy to find a room to sleep in and on cold nights in Grand Bend he sleeps in a friend's car. "It's a great life," said Jerry who expects that by the time he gets home the whole summer will have cost him $10. "But I know I can't get anywhere without an education. If I were 40 years old I couldn't do this." This fall Gerry will enter Grade 13 and Gerald, 17, will be in grade 11. BOOKS Grand Bend Public Library is looking for books. Anyone wishing to donate used books is asked to leave them at the library which is the upstairs of the town hall. "We're hoping some cottagers or people with children who have grown up will donate some," said librarian Mrs. Elmer Des Jardine. The library is open Tuesdays from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m. BRUCE REFRIGERATION Sales and Service GRAND BEND Phone 238-2385 Drag WANT results ADS Competition --Doug Brinjak, London, 9.89 et, 140.18 mph; Martin Duynoven, Sarnia, 9.42 et, 147.54 mph.
