councillor and a member of the
school board, and, as stated
above, is this year filling the
honorable position of Mayor.
It was ,he who proposed and
inaugurated the scheme for
erecting our present water-

arid the purchase of the .new
agricultural park and buildings,
each of which are f u 11 y

pamphlet, and under his administration
several minor improvements are being

to the beauty and attractiveness of our
town.
contemporary of " The Signal " in the
compilation and publication of the
ILLUSTRATED SIGNAL -STAR. The first
Conservative newspaper established in
Goderich was " The Gazette," in 1846, by
John Beverley Giles, followed successively
by " The • Loyalist " and " The Times,"
published by E. Woodcock, still a resident
of our town, and " The- United Empire,"
by Alex. McClenaghan ; and in 1866 "The
Goderich Star " arose on the journalistic
firmament, its promoter being W. D.
Donaghey, now in the Canadian Customs
Department. The late Alex. .Simmons
joined Mr. Donaghey in its publication, and
after the former retired Mr. Simmons
conducted the paper alone, being succeeded
by the present publisher in November,
Goderich, and whatever tends to advance
its interests has had and willhave the loyal
and unselfish support of this journal. The
present publication is the outcome of plans -
and correspondence originating with the
publisher of " The Star," which culminated
in the proposition taken up by the Board
of Trade, and if .the result be to attract the
attention of the outside world to the beauty
and advantages of our town, none will be
more pleased than " The Star." As a local
newspaper." The Star " takes a place with
the best country weeklies in Ontario, and
scrupulous care is taken to exclude from
its columns anything not suitable for the
family circle. For the execution of job and
book printing " The Star " office is well
equipped, and it has an enviable reputation
for the quality of the work-
manship turned out. Frequent

DAVID FISHER,
IMPORTER AND BREEDER OF, AND
DEALER. IN HEAVY AND
LIGHT HORSES.
No citizen of Goderich is
better known throughout On-
tario and a large section of the
United States than is jolly,
genial and wide awake "'Dave
Fisher," as he is familiarly
called. One of the oldest
horsemen in the county, he has
handled more horses and won
more honors with them than
almost any other man in the
province. His stock farms are
in the adjoining township of
Colborne, where he has at all
times as fine a collection of
horseflesh as can be seen in
several days' drive. One of Dave's
greatest victories was the winning of a
medal and diploma at the Centennial
Exposition in 1876, competing against a
host of Canadian and American horsemen,
and this record he has kept good ever
since. While handling at present princi-
pally heavy draught animals, Mr. Fisher
has splendid specimens of the Cleveland
bay and Canadian coach stock, and anyone
in want of a fine animal will find him
capable of supplying them. Mr. Fisher
is a regular. and successful visitor at the
chief western fairs from Chicago to St. Louis.
