Early in the present year the Goderich Board of Trade took up the subject of having the advantages of the town written up and published in pamphlet form, so that the outside world would have an opportunity of knowing of the progress that_has been made during the past few years. In 1887 some $7,000 had been expended in the purchase of an Agricultural Park of over sixteen acres, and.in erecting a pavilion, machinery hall and other suitable buildings. In 1888 the electric light system vvas introduced, and in the same year a perfect waterworks system, supplied with the F.rest water, had been laid through the town. The Town Coun- cil for 1889 took up the work of public improvements in an earnest manner, and outlined a plan of campaign that showed that the era of progress was to be continued, and that there would be no stoppage in the onward growth and prosperity of the town.To have all these advantages placed before the outside public and to show that Goderich (which has in past years been famed over the continent as a summer resort), was abreast of the times and ahead of its previous record, the Board of Trade undertook to represent to the Town Council the necessity of the publication which is now before our readers in THE ILLUSTRATED SIGNAL -STAR."` At a Council meeting at which the representations of the Board of Trade were brought forward, and all details of the scheme explained, it was decided to grant aid to the enterprise from the town funds, and Messrs. McGillicuddy and Mitchell, the publishers of the Signal and Star, respectively, were asked to undertake the publication. The local newspaper men accepted the trust, and the result is the.handsomely illustrated work now before the public. The views of Goderich found in these pages are from the cameras .result local photographers, Messrs. Sallows and Stewart ; tae engravin;i are th work of The Toronto Engraving Co.,' 53 King street west, Toronto, F. Brigden, manager, and from the Canadian Photo -Engraving Bureau, 203 Yonge street, Toronto, I. F. Moore, man- ager ; the paper and covers are the product of the mills of the Canada Paper Co., Toronto ; the maps and a number of the most particular drawings were executed by Mr. W.m. Revell, 618 Ontario street, Toronto ; the writing and typesetting was the joint labor of the two local offices ; and the printing was the work of the Signal press room. The work is now before the public, and the pub- lishers feel that they have more than filled the trust which was committed to them. The size of the pamphlet is eight pages more than was originally contemplated, the large number of illustrations having necessitated the increase. To the business men who so nobly assisted the council in making the enterprise a success the thanks of the management are given, --and to those who endeavored to give it the cold shoulder we have.nothing to say but that they can obtain copies of THE ILLUSTRATED SIGNAL -STAR at either of the offices of publication at the same price —15c per copy—as those Who supported us.
