A young man
from Lucknow
who died in an
automobile crash
near Barrie on
Monday is being
remembered as a
hard worker who
loved to joke
around.
John Hamilton,
manager of
McRobert Fuels in
Lucknow, said
Friday that New-
ton Green, 18,
who had worked
for him for about
five years, was a
very ambitious
employee who
was always smiling.
"He was a great kid," said Hamilton. "He was very outgoing
and good with the public."
Mr. Green died Monday when, according to the OPP, the
car he was driving struck the back of a parked fire service
truck that was responding to a crash around 7 p.m. in the
southbound lanes of Hwy. 400 in Severn Twp.
Simcoe County Paramedics and Severn Twp. Fire Service
treated the young driver, who was the lone occupant of the
vehicle, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash was one of several in the area on Monday as road
conditions became treacherous due to falling temperatures
and high winds, the OPP said.
Hamilton said he hired Mr. Green about five years ago after
he had finished public school and came to him looking for a
job. Hamilton said his young employee had a way with the
older customers.
"He liked to joke around, he was a bit of a jokester and it
went over well," said Hamilton. "Older people especially do
like kids to chit-chat while they were filling up the car, talking
weather and stuff like that. He is a kid that would talk to
everybody."
Hamilton said Mr. Green had started college in September
in Barrie and had aspirations to become a chef or a cook, yet
he still worked some shifts at the full serve gas bar when he
could.
"When you go off to school time is limited and you don't
always get back home," said Hamilton. "But he was still on
our list to help out."
Hamilton said Mr. Green also worked some shifts at the
Three Creeks Bar and Grill in town.
"He came to me and asked me about going there to try to
get some experience and I said by all means because if you
want to pursue a career like that it would be great for him to
get some experience," said Hamilton. "He didn't want to give
up this job either and he just kind of floated between the two
of us:'
Hamilton said Mr. Green was a really good bowler as his
parents owned the bowling alley in town and he also played
basketball in high school.
Mr. Green is the survived by his parents, Ron and Anita
Elliott of Lucknow, and his siblings: Richard, Rachel and
Charles. He is also survived by his birth mother Tammy
Green, of Kitchener, and his sister Starr Green of Mildmay.
Visitation was to be held Friday afternoon and evening at
the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home in Lucknow.
The funeral service was scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at
Lucknow Presbyterian Church with interment at the Green-
hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to BGCFS - Founda-
tion or Newton Green Scholarship Fund, with cheques made
to AMDSB trust fund.
