The Bruce Botanical Food Gardens (BBFG)
has been working hard to discover a new apple
original to Ripley. And they've found it.
"It would be a great cultural component for
Ripley," said Taylor. "We want to promote heir-
loom foods."
They discovered the old Ripley rail -line was
lined with all sorts of different kinds of wild
apple trees, likely from past train riders who
threw apple cores out the windows, creating a
unique DNA for each individual apple tree.
The apples were tested for size, taste, healthy
bounty and many other components until it
was limited down to three, which were brought
to the annual Ripley Fall Fair for locals to taste -
test. Finally the Ripley Apple was chosen.
"We want to create a sitting area across from
the tree," said Taylor, "people go on apple trails
and it's in such a beautiful, picturesque
scene:'
The apple will be reproduced using Scion
Wood Cuttings in February. If an apple tree
grows from a seed it is not biologically identi-
cal to the parent tree, cutting and grafting will
ensure that the trees are identical to the origi-
nal Ripley Apple tree. In April the apples will
be grafted to wood cut by O'Keefe Grange, an
heirloom apple expert from Dobbington, and
will likely be ready in 2014, and by the Ripley
Old Boys Reunion in 2015.
