Owen Sound trustee Marg Gaviller
has been returned to the chair's posi-
tion at the Bluewater District School
Board.
Gaviller was chosen by fellow trus-
tees Tuesday evening for the board's top
job over Kincardine -area Jan Johnstone,
who has been chair for the past two
years.
Although nominated for the vice -
chair position, Johnstone declined and
Wiarton-area trustee Terry Bell, now in
the third year of his first term on the
board, was elected as vice -chair defeat-
ing Jim Dawson of Holstein, who has
served alongside Johnstone for the past
two years.
Gaviller, who was nominated by Bell,
promised to "work diligently" to ensure
the board "is doing the very best it can
for our students', adding she believes a
new person in the board's top position
will bring "a different manner, strategy,
perspective, voice and priorities" to the
board table.
She acknowledged declining enrol-
ments and shortfalls in funding "will
continue to challenge us" and told
fellow trustees the board "needs to get
its financial house in order, including
eliminating excess student spaces."
Gaviller admitted there will be "diffi-
cult decisions to make" when the board
considers its 2014-15 budget.
When nominating Gaviller for the
position, Bell likened the leader's posi-
tion to that of a captain of a ship and
told trustees he believed Gaviller has
the qualities needed to provide effec-
tive leadership.
"I believe she will encourage unity
and a team concept. A strong leader
doesn't need to use intimidation, fear
or confrontation to get the job done,"
Bell said.
"I am convinced we can work
together well," Gaviller told trustees,
adding the board needs to do all it can
to ensure public confidence in its work,
adding the board "needs to help our
constituents better understand the dif-
ficulties facing us."
Hanover/West Grey trustee John
Chapman said trustees "felt there was a
need for change" in leadership at the
board table. "I wish our new chair and
vice chair only the best, knowing they
will bring experience and integrity to
their respective positions."
Hydro One offers holiday
energy saving tips
QMI Agency
`Tis the season for celebrating the holi-
days with family and friends and Hydro
One is offering tips to keep the energy
costs down while entertaining this holi-
day season:
• Use the Time -of -Use schedule - Take
advantage of off-peak periods on week-
ends and holidays. Remember December
25 and 26 are considered holidays but not
December 24.
• On -peak is 7a.m. -11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
to 7 p.m.. Mid -peak is 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. •
Off-peak 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
• When cooking on your stove top,
match the size of the pan to the heating
element - more heat will get to the pan
and less will be lost.
• Baking holiday treats? Check on your
treats by looking through the window on
your oven. Opening the oven door, even
for a few seconds, will lower the internal
temperature of the oven.
• Delicious leftovers? Allow leftovers to
cool before placing them in the fridge or
freezer.
• Pass on preheating. While preheating
may be necessary for baking, it's not
needed for things like roasts or
casseroles.
• Time your holiday cheer. Put your
outdoor holiday lights on a timer to only
have them on during off-peak hours and
turn them off overnight.
• Lower the thermostat: If you are
entertaining guests, consider lowering
the temperature in your home. The
increased body heat and cooking will
help keep your house warm. If someone
else is hosting you this holiday season,
lower the thermostat in your home while
you are away.
