Henderson optimistic about cancer battle, turns to faith

It's a Christmas Miracle!
"The Lord be good," was Don Cher-
ry's reaction.
Henderson said the good news is
also that most of the people in his
clinical trial have had similar results
and that one day Canadians may be
able to gain access to this yet -to -be
approved treatment.
He is hopeful it could mean that
chemotherapy could become a thing
of the past.
"When people say it's a miracle I
just say I will wait until I get to heaven
and ask," teased a smiling and upbeat
Henderson.
He feels fantastic and looks even
better.
"My wife joked she wants to take
some of those pills because they must
have Botox in them," he said.
The Hendersons are realistic that
with cancer, every day is special.
"I am told that this drug will work,
they think for two years, so we don't

that."
But what he does know is Hender-

Christmas with his family and even
his 71st birthday on Jan. 28.
"I feel blessed because my dad died
at 49," he said. "I have never been
worried because when you have hope
and peace, you can handle anything."
Henderson said he wouldn't change
a thing.
"I think having the cancer allowed
me to be able to freely talk about my
faith," he said.
And, this Christmas, he is also able
to reflect on another remarkable do-
or-die moment he pulled out from
suspected defeat and turned into vic-
tory just in the nick of time.
Henderson was born in Kincardine
and grew up in Lucknow.

Christmas a busy time in Purple Grove

The December meeting of the WI was
held at Janet Rhody's. As usual her home
was wonderfully decorated for Christmas.
President Marilyn Reid welcomed every-
one and had an interesting reading.
Largaret McInnes gave the Scripture on
the Christmas story in Luke. The roll call
was answered by the ladies bringing gifts
for the Ripley and District Christmas
hamper. After the minutes, the ladies
were thanked for all their work when they
catered to the Lion's club.
There was a good discussion on folks
we would recommend for an Ontario Vol-
unteer award on behalf of the Institute.
We talked again about the W I member
profiles. Money will be donated to the
Purple Grove Community Centre and the
Women's House, Kincardine, as well as
the usual Christmas donation to the
Sleeping Children Around the World.
Deanna Scott then convened the rest of
the meeting. She started off with a hilari-
ous recipe for making cookies, and then
introduced our speaker Gail Vander-
hoek. Gail gave a very helpful demonstra-
tion on arranging Christmas centerpieces.
One was given to Largaret McInnes and
Deanna won the second one.
The meeting closed with a delicious
lunch provided by Deanna and Largaret.
From everyone at the Institute we hope
that you have a wonderful Christmas and

all the best in the New Year.
Congratulations to Bertha Tout who
was honoured by family and friends in
Ripley recently. She reached the great age
of 100.
Congratulations to several people in
the riding who were recognized for their
volunteer contributions by Lisa Thomp-
son MPP at the Teeswater Town Hall on
Friday evening. Local folks included
Hugh Mason, Doreen McGlynn of Tees -
water, Tim Mancell of Walkerton, Jim and
Fran Farrell, and Rick McMurray of Luc -
know. Lisa Thompson made a donation
to the Wes4Youth memorial fund in rec-
ognition of their outstanding community
involvement. In addition to the Christmas
concert put on by Teeswater talent, Tees -
water Town Hall and the South Bruce
Municipality were celebrating the recent
renovations made to the Town Hall. The
ribbon cutting was made with Trillium
foundation representatives.
Our sympathy is sent to the families of
the late Wally Ballagh formerly of Teeswa-
ter, Vic Haldenby, and Bob Whittig. They
will all be missed.
We hear that the Kincardine Commu-
nity Singers and the Hawk Theatre in Luc -
know were appreciated by all attending
their presentations. Thanks folks for all
your hard work in making these
performances.
It was good to see some more of the
bean and corn crops coming off.
We are thankful to hear of the safe
arrival of Colleen and J.P. Greenwood's
new boy. Another grandson for Nancy
and Paul Greenwood of Goderich, and
great -grandson of June and Earl Elliott of
Wingham.
Largaret McInnes was pleased to have
visits from two of her daughters Linda
McInnes and Dianne Gottschalk
recently.
Mary Anne Kukoly enjoyed visits last
week with Frances Kingston of Chesley
and Helen and Ray Stanley in Hanover.
Bluewater District School Board
Bluewater District School Board trus-
tees are going to revise their policies
and procedures surrounding the school
accommodation review process (ARC).
Parents and communities involved in
recent ARC processes, including Ama-
bel-Sauble/Hepworth, Derby, Chesley
and Hanover, have complained about
the overwhelming amount of work that
is expected by volunteers, mostly par-
ents and community members, during
the ARC process.
During the public meetings, numer-
ous times the board heard a single
school review, such as was the case with
Derby Public School in Kilysth, "isn't
fair" nor was pitting one community
against another as was the case in both
the Amabel-Sauble/Hepworth and
Chesley/Hanover reviews.
Trustees Marg Gaviller, Marilyn
McComb, Kevin Larson and Terry Bell
volunteered to serve on a sub -commit-
tee which will examine feedback
received from other trustees, as well as
board staff.
Among items to be addressed are a
greater emphasis regarding the purpose
of an accommodation review - to
decrease excess student space; as well
as the need to ensure both the area
trustee and the affected public knows
what it is involved in the process before
it begins.
Other items to be addressed includ-
ing avoiding a single school review, bet-
ter communication, a look at transi-
tional planning and funding and the
need for an independent chair or facili-
tator for each review process.
