Lucknow Wingham 86ers take home gold from Fallfest
Brad Humprey
The Lucknow Wingham 86ers
bantam girls 'C' hockey team
braved the weather and cold to
play in the Kitchener Lady Rang-
ers Fallfest Hockey Tournament
on Nov 22-24.
Game 1 on Friday Nov 22, the
86ers played against the Kincar-
dine Knucks. The game started
fast with some nervous 86er girls
taking to the ice. Kincardine came
out strong and took a 1-0 lead.
86ers responded with some great
moves down the ice and hard
work around the net to end up
with a 5-1 win.
Goal scorers for the game were
Lexi Smith, Taylor Humphrey,
Robin Montgomery, Loretta Hig-
gins and Sydney Pruden. Assists
were Taylor Humphrey, Jessica
Nelson with two, Alicia Douglas,
Emma Sangster, Carley Kreller
and Robin Montgomery. Great
effort by all the girls. This would
prove to be a very important win
for the team.
Game two had the team up
early for a 7 a.m. game time
against the Sarnia Lady Sting. This
game was a nail biter with lots of
action in both ends of the ice. The
86er goalie Pilar Dietrich made
some key saves and played great
positional hockey to keep the
86ers in this game. In the end, the
86ers came out with a 2-1 win.
Lexi Smith put one on the top
shelf over the Sarnia goalies arm
and Robin Montgomery sealed
the win with an end to end effort
to score with 11 seconds remain-
ing in the game. Assists went to
Katie Murray, Taylor Humphrey,
Emma Metcalfe, Vicky Nicholson
and Sky Maldini.
In the third game the early
morning start was wearing on the
team. The BCHS girls were a bit
keener and more rested than the
86ers. The 86ers got off to a slow
start. BCHS proved to be too much
with a score of 2-1 for BCHS. The
lone goal was a good follow up
and quick hands on a rebound by
Alicia Douglas to put the 86ers on
the board. Assists went to Katie
Murray and Emily Bloemberg.
Game 4 saw the team lace up
against Petrolia. This Pertolia team
was known to be diggers and they
proved. The 86ers legs were tired
and playing their 3rd game of the
day. There was some good action
in both ends, but the Petrolia team
never gave up. A point shot tipped
in front of the 86er net proved to
be the winner and the 86ers lost
1-0.
So at the end of the round robin
play, BCHS had won all their
games and were with 8 points,
86ers and Kincardine were tied
with four points each, but head to
head, the 86ers moved on due to
the great effort in game one. It was
off to the finals Sunday against a
really tough and unbeaten BCHS
team.
The final game started out with
lots of action in both ends. Again
Pilar Dietrich was making the key
saves to give the 86ers a chance to
get into the game. All three, 86er
lines worked well together and as
a team and BCHS knew they had a
tough team to play against Sun-
day. In the second period, a nice
passing play started with Jessica
Nelson over to Lexi Smith in the
corner who passed out in front of
the net to Sydney Pruden who was
in perfect position to bury the
lstand very important goal of the
final game. The strong BCHS team
didn t let off. A scramble around
the 86ers net saw the BCHS team
tie the game up mid third with a
tip in.
The game ended in a 1-1 tie so it
was off to OT where the teams
played with 3 players and a goalie.
Not too far into OT saw some back
and forth action with Lexi Smith,
Jessica Nelson and Robin Mont-
gomery giving the BCHS team all
they could handle. Robin Mont-
gomery held the puck in on the
line, passed into Lexi Smith
behind the net, Smith battled hard
and worked the puck out front to
Jessica Nelson. Nelson shot and
the BCHS goalie made a great
save, but Nelson stuck with it and
buried the rebound to seal the
game!! 86ers WIN !!! What an awe-
some goal by Nelson and what a
great finish to win gold at this very
competitive tournament.
