The teams compete for a spot because Lucknow is one of the few tournaments that helps subsidize the cost of travelling to the international Silver Stick event in Mooretown, as the cost can be dear. "At this age, some of these guys are reaching into their own pockets for this and we want to help them with that," he said. Gunter said they're always proud to have Paul Henderson in attendance and to receive kind words from him about the level of hockey that takes place. He added Henderson shared stories about how juvenile impacted his professional hockey career, after he was discovered as a midget playing juvenile during a game in Goderich as a teen. "He scored 18 goals that night and the scouts wanted to know who that kid from Lucknow was, said Gunter. Henderson often autographs items for the Most Valuable Player of each game and added it's hard to impress 18 -20 -year-olds, but his star -power helps. Gunter said he event survives through the help of a committee of 19 people, of which 17 have been with it since the beginning. Over 100 busi- nesses sponsor the event each year, with Mont- gomery Ford taking the lead sponsorship. Wednesday, December 4, 2013 • Lucknow Sentinel 3 Passing motorists alert residents to house fire Smoke coming from a house caught the attention of two passing motorists the morning of Nov. 23 on Amberley Road west of Wingham. Around 10:30 a.m., two good samari- tans observed a farmhouse starting to catch on fire. They immediately stopped and attempted to alert the occupants inside by banging on the doors and win- dows of the residence. Three adults were inside the residence at the time, two of them were sleeping. The commotion outside was enough to alert one of the residents. The passer-by motorists then entered the residence and assisted the three occupants to safety. Huron OPP officers were assisted on scene by Lucknow Fire Department Fire- fighters. The home sustained smoke and water damage however the structure was saved due to the efforts of the fire person- nel on scene. The dollar value of damages has not been established at this point. The cause of the fire has not been determined however it is not suspicious in nature. Head-on crash, five sent to hospital Five people were sent to hospital with non -life-threatening injuries after a head- on crash on Highway 21 on Nov 27. South Bruce OPP were called to the incident on Highway 21 in Huron Town- ship at 6:14 p.m., along with Bruce County EMS and the Ripley -Huron Fire Department. Man dies at pig farm near Gorrie A 60 -year-old Howick Township man is dead after pig farm workers found him unresponsive in a manure pit near Gorrie on Nov 25. Huron OPP officers and paramedics from Huron County EMS responded to a pig farm operation located on McIn- tosh Line east of Gorrie just after 11:30 a.m. A worker at the farm was found Jack Schwehr, 60, unresponsive in a manure pit by another co-worker. The male was declared dead at the scene by emer- gency personnel. Huron OPP officers along with the assistance of OPP Identification Serv- ices (IDENT) continue to investigate. The Ontario Ministry of Labour has been notified. A post-mortem examination was scheduled for Nov 26, 2013 at London Health Sciences Centre. MAIcE•(A). ISH.
