Avon Maitland Schools Keeping Pace EQAO Primary
with Provincial Growth in Literacy and Junior Results
Submitted
The Avon Maitland Dis-
trict School Board continues
to keep pace with provincial
gains in literacy in both the
Primary and Junior Assess-
ments of Reading and Writ-
ing (EQAO). Over the past 5
years, AMDSB scores in Jun-
ior (Grade 6) Reading have
steadily improved. Back in
the 2009-2010 school year
70% of students were at or
above provincial standard.
In the 2013-2014 assessment
Junior Reading scores now
show that 77% of Avon Mait-
land students have met or
exceeded the standard. Over
the same period of time,
Junior Writing scores have
improved by 10 percentage
points, with 72% of our Jun-
ior students meeting or
exceeding the provincial
standard in the latest
assessment.
Our Primary students con-
tinued on their upward trajec-
tory in both Reading and Writ-
ing, with 65% of our students
meeting or exceeding the pro-
vincial standard in Reading, a 4
point gain over last year and a 7
percentage point improvement
over the past 5 years. Writing
scores also continue to climb,
with 72% of students meeting or
exceeding the provincial stand-
ard up 6 percentage points from
2012-2013. Over the past five
years test results have improved
by 9 percentage points.
Avon Maitland scores in
both Primary and Junior
Assessments of Mathematics
have followed the provincial
trend. 63% of our Primary
students met or exceeded
the provincial standard,
down 4 percentage points
from the previous year. 49%
of our Junior students are at
or above the provincial
standard, a drop of 7 points
from 2012-2013.
Primary and Junior
Mathematics, both provin-
cially and locally, continue
to be a high priority in
improvement planning at
all levels. Data from EQAO

Bluewater District School Board
Submitted
There are some encour-
aging results for Bluewater
District School Board fol-
lowing the release of the
Education Quality and
Accountability Office
(EQAO) 2013 - 2014
assessments of Reading,
Writing and Mathematics
for the primary (grades 1 -
3) and junior (grades 4 - 6)
divisions.
Overall, Bluewater
schools are seeing the
continuation of an upward
trend in Writing scores for
both primary and junior
students. Since 2008 -
2009, the Writing assess-
ment results have
increased by 9 percent for
primary and 10 percent at
the junior level.
Positive gains are also
being made in the Read-
ing assessments. Bluewa-
ter's primary division test
results have slightly
increased since 2012 -
2013 and remain consist-
ent when looking at the
past six years. The more
significant jump is in the
junior division, with a 5
percent increase in Read-
ing compared to the previ-
ous year, and 8 percent
overall since 2008 - 2009.
In Mathematics, the pri-
mary division is also seeing
a slight increase over the
previous year. In the junior
division, a decrease in the
results mirrors a declining
trend in EQAO math scores
across the province.
"We are encouraged by
the latest EQAO results for
Bluewater, especially in
our Writing assessments.
Moving forward, we will
continue to focus on jun-
ior level math and inter-
mediate literacy as we
strive to achieve and
exceed the provincial
average. As always, we
view these scores from a
broad perspective in the
realization that it takes so
much more than stand-
ardized test results when
evaluating the overall
effectiveness of a school,"
says Superintendent of
Education Lori Wilder.
