The 2014 Alice Munro Fes-
tival's new events offer varia-
tions on the theme of cele-
brating the works of Nobel
Laureate Alice Munro along
with the return of popular
offereings. All opinions are
welcome, which often sparks
lively discussion of favourite
short stories and characters
created by Ms. Munro's imag-
ination. Complete informa-

A record number of short
stories were submitted for the
2014 Short Story Competi-
tion. Selected finalists in the
two age categories, Youth 14
- 20 years and Adults 21 and
over will be awarded their
cash prizes during the Satur-
day, September 27th Gala
Dinner. The judges are final-
izing their review of the 252
stories received this year,
while volunteer members of
the Alice Munro Festival's
steering committee are com-
pleting plans for Festival
events that celebrate emerg-
ing writers and avid readers.
Kicking off this year's Festi-
val is a new event - The Book
Club Bash. Alice Munro fans
and members of regional
book clubs are invited to a
lively moderated discussion
of Alice Munro's latest collec-
tion "Dear Life" on Friday,
September 26th at the Wing -
ham Golf Course, hosted by
the Huron County Library
and moderated by the Branch
Services Librarian Jennifer
Zoethout. On Saturday mom-
ing, at the Blyth Memorial
Hall, three simultaneous
workshops are planned for
those who wish to hone their
craft. Melanie Chambers will
be back to expand on last
year's Self -Editing session,
while Jodi Jerome will tackle
"Beyond Google, Research
for Writers" and Brian Francis
will share his expertise of
writing for new technologies
in "Beyond Print: Getting
Creative with Social Media"

of Part II Bistro- On Reading
Alice Munro will feature
expert commentators, also
avid Munro fans, who will
explore Ms. Munro's writing,
settings, and character

honour the work of our Nobel
Prize-winning Laureate in
appropriate fashion.
After lunch guests head to
Wingham to enjoy sifting
through the Alice Munro
Collection at the North
Huron Museum or a few
quiet moments in the Liter-
ary Garden. Then, CKNX
and Marion de Vries, Artis-
tic Director of the Blyth Fes-
tival, will host the second
annual "Reading Aloud
Allowed in Huron" - the
ever -popular open mic
event where creative writers,
poets, comedians and musi-
cians can share their works
- music, comedy, poetry,
fiction or non-fiction with
an attentive and apprecia-
tive audience. This is a free
Culture Day's event.
The Gala - Appreciating
Alice will be held at the Wing -
ham Legion with guest
speaker Miranda Hill, co-
ordinator of Canada's Project
Bookmark. www.project-
bookmarkcanada.ca). Ms.
Hill will talk about her work
on this literary campaign as
well as her experience as a
writer and member of a liter-
ary family.
On Sunday, September 28,
guests will join organizers for
brunch at the Fireside Cafe,
Wingham, to chat about the
2014 events, and guide plans
for the 2015 Festival which
will see some growth through
the Alice Munro Partnership
Group - a project exploring
labour market opportunities
in tourism, retail, construc-
tion, education and literacy
as a result of Ms. Munro's
Nobel Prize award.
"Through the Eyes of Alice','
a guided walking tour hosted
by local historian Jodi Jerome
will feature stories about the
life of Alice Munro as she
grew up in the area.

The opening of the Ripley
Fall Fair will begin at 8:00
p.m. in the upstairs of the
Ripley Arena. The program
will include the 3rd Annual
Prince and Princess compe-
tition, Pie and Cake Auction,
Local Dance Talent and the
Crowning of the 2014-2015
Ambassador. There are 3
contestants in the Ambassa-
dor competition: Alexandra
Chapleau, Meghan Johnson
and Delaney Dundas.
Picasa
Alexandra is the daughter
of Ron & Marla Chapleau
and is currently in Grade
12 at Kincardine District
Secondary School. After high
school she plans to attend
post -secondary school to
study in the health care field.
Alexandra loves highland
dancing, theatre, and music,
whether it be singing or
playing the piano. She enjoys
volunteering her time at
Special Olympic events,
leadership conferences and
Leukodystrophy conferences.

Ripley Amb Comp Delaney Dundas
Delaney is the daughter of
Doug & Heather Dundas and
is currently in Grade 12 at
Kincardine District Secondary
School. After high school
she plans to attend post-
secondary school to study
criminology. Delaney enjoys
horseback riding, rugby,
badminton, and spending time
with her family & friends. She
volunteers her time by helping
at community events such as
Christmas in the park, the fall
fair, and vacation bible school.

Ripley Amb Comp Meghan Johnson
Megan is the daughter of
Sean & Cherie Johnson and
is currently in Grade 12 at
Kincardine District Secondary
School. After high school she
hopes to develop a career as
a police officer or a journalist.
Meghan enjoys spending
her time skating, reading,
playing piano, or going for
ice cream with her friends.
She volunteers her time with
the Ripley Huron Skating
Club, Link Crew for Grade 9
orientation day, and the Ripley
Artisan Festival. Meghan is
