Once all members had arrived, President Logan Curran opened the meeting with the pledge. Mitchell Curran read the secretary minutes of meeting 5. Rebecca Richards passed around a clear bag of beans divided into 10 sections that was donated as a dem- onstration courtesy of the Hensall District Co-op. Each section had a different type of edible bean and members had a contest to see who could identify the most. The package con- tained 3 varieties of kidney beans, cranberry beans, soybeans, azuki beans, pinto beans, pink, white and black beans. Ken and Kyle then lead the club out to a kidney bean field. They explained how important nitrogen was as fertilizer for these beans as they do not have nodules like soybeans. Leigh Hudson described what White Mould looked like and the members scav- enged around the field to find it. Rebecca described why bean plants have aborted pods and members looked around to find some. After the members had looked through the field, analyzed the different parts of the plant and even sam- pled some kidney beans, they were led over to the bean puller. Ken explained that the beans must be pulled while there is still dew on the plants in order to prevent pods from shat- tering, let to dry and then combined. The club then was shown the special com- bine used to harvest the beans. Since beans must have a fully intact coating after they are harvested, they can't be put through a regular combine. The bean combine relies on shaking to separate the bean from the pod rather than threshing. Rebecca and Leigh led the members to the shed and demonstrated to the members how they must prepare their entries for the Lucknow fair. The leaders gave the members tips on how to pick their 12 cobs of corn, 5 bean plants or sam- ple of wheat. Members are to submit their entries on the Wednesday night before the fair. Rebecca also reminded the members of the book requirements for the club. Logan closed the meeting and snack provided by Leigh Hudson was enjoyed by all. The members will meet next on September 10 to submit their entries. Submitted Members of the Lucknow 4-H Crops Club were show the specialty combine used for beans during thier meeting at the farm of Ken and Kyle DedCorte on August 28, 2014.
