Feast or Famine
It has most certainly been a busy week
in and around the area. So many places
to go, things to do, people to see. There
has been so much going on that it would
not all fit into one edition of the Sentinel.
First of all, I have the pleasure of introduc-
ing our new Office Administrator, Joy Jur-
jens. She has joined us this week after Jessica
Bailey moved on to new employment. We
wish both well in their new positions.
As the school year begins, the Lucknow
Highschool Reunion had their biannual
gathering. Many in our communities have
asked why the Sentinel no longer runs col-
umns written by the students of the local
schools. Lucknow Central Public School,
Ripley -Huron Community School and
Brookside Public School have all been
asked and have accepted the invitation to
submit weekly reports. I am looking for-
ward to bringing this feature back to the
communities. In the interim, Ripley -Huron
and Lucknow schools have already been
making news that appears in this issue.
There are events still to come. Look in this
week's Sentinel to find out about the Bruce
Botanical Food Garden Harvest Dinner and
Auction and the upcoming movie to be
shown at Lucknow's Red Tent at Grassroots
Retreat. The Fall Fairs for both Lucknow
and Ripley are fast approaching. Please
remember that if you wish to promote your
event that the Sentinel needs sufficient lead
time to get your message into print before
the event takes place.
The Bruce County Plowing Match was held
just south of Ripley. The results are in this edi-
tion. More photos and interviews from the
match will appear in an upcoming issue.
We congratulate those who are making a
difference by raising funds and awareness,
such as the ALS Bucket Challenge partici-
pants and the Ride for Dad. Recognition is
also due for a local regular blood donor and a
memorial tree planting for a former resident.
I would like to remind those who have
photos and stories to submit that the
deadline for the Wednesday edition is 2
p.m. on the preceding Friday. However, I
would ask that if it is possible you could
send in your stories and pictures earlier to
alleviate some of the rush to prepare for
printing. This would be greatly appreciated
and would allow for each item to receive
the careful attention it deserves.
Lucknow News
By Ruth Dobrensky
An 80th birthday celebration was held
recently at the Legion for Frank Alton. It
was obvious that Frank's involvement
with the Ag Society is not unjustified, the
flower arrangements at his party were
absolutely beautiful.
It was with sadness that Lucknow
heard about the fire at the Lucknow
Community Christian Reformed
Church. We understand that the con-
gregation is temporarily holding ser-
vices at Lucknow Presbyterian Church
while repairs are being made to their
church. We do hope that the damage
was not too extensive and that the con-
gregation will be back in their own
church before too long.
Last Sunday, Nancy MacIntyre of the
Eastern Star travelled to Trinity Anglican
Church in Blyth (Parish of New Begin-
nings) to present a scholarship cheque to
Brittany Cartwright who is planning to
enter the ministry.
For all those out there who attend
Tuesday's Table, it will be starting up
again in October. Tuesday, Oct. 7, to be
precise, the first meal will be held at St.
Peter's Anglican Church.
I spent last Friday in Blyth at the
Threshers Reunion in Blyth working at
the Trinity Anglican booth where we
served bacon on a bun along with fresh
cut fries and onion rings until I looked
like bacon on a bun with fries. This was
the third or fourth year I've done this and
although it makes for a long exhausting
day, it's also a lot of fun.
I see that there will be a soap box derby
at the fair again this year, if only I were
about 50 years younger, I'd enter the race
myself. Before you laugh, I was in a home
made movie many years ago where I
drove a soap box in a race, and won.
Before you say, it was in the script, the
outcome wasn't planned, in fact, the
entire movie was ad-lib.
Sympathy of the community to the
families of: Dorothy MacKinnon, 82,
Teeswater; Mary Nethery, 82, Belgrave;
and Shirley Christianson, 78, Lucknow.
Lucknow UCW News

Lucknow UCW Afternoon Group met
on September 2 in the Church Parlour.
Deanna Reavie welcomed everyone back
from our summer break. As her own sons
and young grandchildren are currently
visiting in Ontario, Deanna opened the
program reading "Grandmothers are
Old -Fashioned" based on 2 Timothy 1:5.
Grandmothers have lots of experience
and opinions to share, so make the most
of these opportunities with grandchil-
dren; read them Bible stories, pray for
them, tell them Jesus loves them, for they
do absorb it all.
We sang the hymn "A little seed lay fast
asleep".
Deanna read an inspiring article about
retirement and the freedom it presents to
embrace new opportunities. We sang
"Father, lead me day by day".
As Labour Day has just been, Karen
Latour read an amusing resume punning a
lifetime of jobs. And now we are in Sep-
tember, Deanna read a lovely reflection
"September Song". Our days grow shorter
and the weather is variable as we welcome
autumn, this wonderful time of the year.
Karen opened business first reading
an inspirational article about moving
into a retirement residence and the ben-
efits of adapting with a positive outlook
on embracing the new environment.
Minutes were read. Eight members
answered roll call with highlights of their
summer. Shirley Bolt gave the Treasur-
er's report. Our September birthdays are
Mary Boyle, Ruth Pritchard, and Sharon
Wright. We send get well wishes to Joyce
Adamson in Wingham Hospital.
The Least Coin newsletter, written by a
woman in Halifax about "bullies", asks
that we soothe their hurts, and as
onlookers that we have the courage to
confront and defuse situations with for-
giveness, respect, and peaceful action.
We repeated the Prayer of the Least Coin.
Karen closed reading "Dogs Allowed",
an amusing flip of logic on why a hotel
owner trusts dog behaviour over human.
We repeated the UCW Prayer.
We enjoyed continued fellowship over
a cup of tea and raspberry and pineapple
desserts prepared by Ruth Pritchard and
Shirley Bolt. A reminder of the next Gen-
eral Meeting on September 23 at the
Church.
