Miss Nelson has brought in live specimens to help the stu- dents learn first-hand about Monarch butterflies. To illus- trate their knowledge the stu- dents shared what they have learned so far with the Luc - know Sentinel to pass on to the readers. Monarch butterflies are only found on milkweed. The eggs are laid on the bottom of the leaf. The emerging caterpillars eat the eggshells to get energy. Caterpillars eat a lot. Stu- dents noticed how much of a leaf was eaten in a 2 -day period. They shed their skin 5 times. The next stage is the chrysa- lis which lasts about 2 weeks. When the top starts to turn brown it means the butterfly will hatch soon. Before hatch- ing, the chrysalis turns almost clear. When the butterflies hatch they have a fat tummy. The tummy gets smaller just after hatching as the fluid is pumped into the wings to pump them up. The Monarchs flap their wings to dry them. 'Food for Fines' returns to the Huron County Library. Here's your chance to donate to local food banks, while 'pay- ing' your overdue library fines! From September 15-21, 2014, the Huron County Library is bringing back 'Food for Fines' to all twelve of its branches. Throughout the week, the library branches will accept non-perishable food items as payment for overdue items. Library users have the opportu- nity to clear their record, return overdue materials, and support local food banks. 'Food for Fines' is offered through the Huron County Library, in partnership with the Huron County Health Unit and local food banks. During the program, fines for items are waived on a one-to-one ratio; one item of food for each overdue book! All donations received through 'Food for Fines' are distributed to food banks within Huron County. Some restrictions apply; please visit your local library branch or www.huroncounty.ca/library for more information. lucknowsentinel.com The Monarchs start in Can- ada and fly to Mexico. The 4th generation butterflies are the ones who go to Mexico, mean- ing that there are 3 generations of butterflies that do not migrate. The ones who do migrate live about 7 months, while those who stay where they are born have a shorter lifespan. They have no cell phones or GPS which means the Mon- archs must use instinct to find their way. This has been passed down from their great grand- parent. The students report that it is about 400 km from Luc - know to Mexico. The butterflies fly about 100 miles a day. There will be further updates on the Monarchs leading up to the release party.
