Liberal Nomination in Huron -Bruce
Glammis native Allan
Thompson has been
selected by Liberal Party of
Canada members in
Huron -Bruce to carry the
Liberal banner as their
candidate in the riding in
the coming federal elec-
tion. Thompson won out
over Maarten Bokhout of
Clinton before a crowd of
more than 500 party faith-
ful who turned out to vote
at the evening nomination
meeting held in the Luc -
know Community Centre
on October 20, 2014.
"Welcome to the first day
of the 2015 election cam-
paign," Thompson told the
crowd after his victory was
announced. "My pledge to
you is to provide Huron
Bruce with a new, strong
and energetic voice, a
voice that has been lack-
ing. My pledge to you is to
provide the strongest pos-
sible representation for
Huron -Bruce."
Born and raised on a
farm near Glammis,
Thompson went to school
at Bruce Township Central
Public in Underwood and
Walkerton District Second-
ary School and began his
journalism career as a
reporter with the Kincar-
dine Independent and
Teeswater News. He is a
journalism professor at
Ottawa's Carleton Univer-
sity and a former political
reporter for the Toronto
Star.
Thompson launched his
bid for the Liberal nomina-
tion in mid-July and during
his campaign won high-
profile endorsements from
such party stalwarts as
longtime MPP Murray
Elston and Jack Riddell, a
former provincial agricul-
ture minister.
Thompson was nomi-
nated by former MPP Mur-
ray Elston and the nomina-
tion was seconded by Erica
Murray, from Seaforth,
who is a member of the
Liberal riding association
executive.
In his nomination
speech, Thompson
pledged to work his hard-
est to win the riding back
for the Liberals. During his
campaign Thompson
attended dozens of com-
munity events in the riding
and also used a number of
social media platforms,
including Facebook, Twit-
ter, a weekly newsletter
issued by email and a blog
called ALLAN2015.com.
Thompson is committed
to building the rural econ-
omy in Huron -Bruce and
becoming a strong voice
for farmers, as well as
those who live in the rid-
ing's small towns and sur-
rounding areas. He
believes that his farm
upbringing combined with
his deep knowledge of how
Ottawa works will help him
to bridge the rural -urban
gap. He is also committed
to looking for ways to make
settling down in the region
a more viable option for
young people who are
drawn away to seek
schooling and job
opportunities.

It is time to hit the re -set
button on Canada's politi-

positive, optimistic and
hopeful," Thompson said.
MPP Lisa Thompson's Statement on Small Business Month
Submitted
This month is small busi-
ness month and I want to
especially thank and recog-
nize all the businesses across
the province that keeps our
economy thriving. They are
this province's job creators,
community leaders and the
backbone of our economy.
Small business is big busi-
ness here in Huron -Bruce
and there is nothing more
heartening than when I visit
with small business owners,
running thriving family -run
businesses, and who take
immense pride in what they
do and what they have built
on their own.
In Ontario today, busi-
nesses both small and large
are weighed down by unnec-
essary red tape, high-energy
prices and most recently the
Ontario Retirement Pension
Plan (ORPP). The ORPP will
be implemented in the next
two years and will cost small
businesses approximately
$1,643 per employee, per
year in payroll taxes. This
attitude towards small busi-
ness by the Liberal govern-
ment is stunting growth and
investment opportunities in
our province. It's time that
we help foster a culture of
innovation and job creation.
This is why I advocate for
ideas that give entrepreneurs
a competitive edge like:
affordable energy, the reduc-
tion of red tape, changing
the attitude of government
by welcoming job creators -
not deterring them with reg-
ulations and red tape - and
keeping payroll taxes rea-
sonable by reforming gov-
ernment agencies like the
WSIB.
More people are
employed by small business

than any other segment in
our economy. Small busi-
ness is vital to the Huron -
Bruce economy and we need
to do better as a province to
ensure that businesses that
have three or four employee
this year, are able to grow
and have ten or twenty next
year.
Small business month is
an excellent opportunity to
recognize these businesses
and I would like to person-
ally thank them for all that
they do to make our com-
munities better places to
live, work and raise a family.
