MPP Lisa Thompson's Statement on Small Business Month Submitted This month is small busi- ness month and I want to especially thank and recog- nize all the businesses across the province that keeps our economy thriving. They are this province's job creators, community leaders and the backbone of our economy. Small business is big busi- ness here in Huron -Bruce and there is nothing more heartening than when I visit with small business owners, running thriving family -run businesses, and who take immense pride in what they do and what they have built on their own. In Ontario today, busi- nesses both small and large are weighed down by unnec- essary red tape, high-energy prices and most recently the Ontario Retirement Pension Plan (ORPP). The ORPP will be implemented in the next two years and will cost small businesses approximately $1,643 per employee, per year in payroll taxes. This attitude towards small busi- ness by the Liberal govern- ment is stunting growth and investment opportunities in our province. It's time that we help foster a culture of innovation and job creation. This is why I advocate for ideas that give entrepreneurs a competitive edge like: affordable energy, the reduc- tion of red tape, changing the attitude of government by welcoming job creators - not deterring them with reg- ulations and red tape - and keeping payroll taxes rea- sonable by reforming gov- ernment agencies like the WSIB. More people are employed by small business Because you love eir Iies. Small busi- ness is vital to the Huron - Bruce economy and we need to do better as a province to ensure that businesses that have three or four employee this year, are able to grow and have ten or twenty next year. Small business month is an excellent opportunity to recognize these businesses and I would like to person- ally thank them for all that they do to make our com- munities better places to live, work and raise a family.
