The Giving Spirit
It is evident throughout the pages of this
edition of the Lucknow Sentinel that
the giving spirit is alive and well in our
rural area. This definitely flies in the face of
statistics that continually rate rural areas
as financially inferior. Although there is
not the same per capita income, that does
not dampen the hearts and minds of those
who choose the rural lifestyle.
In Peter Carter's account of his fundrais-
ing efforts this year, it is fitting that he
chose to thank those who so willingly
opened their hearts and pocketbooks to
support him in his causes. It is as much a
tribute to those who sponsor as to those
who participate in the various events in
the area.
There are so many worthwhile causes to
support. It takes very special individuals to
choose to be the face of fundraisers. Not
everyone has the ability, skills or time to
participate in the various events. It is
through sponsoring those who can and do
participate that many are able to show
their caring and willingness to help others.
The need to partner services to bring
about a greater good is evident in the
South Bruce OPP and Victim Services
working cooperatively and combining
resources to better address the needs of
those served by both.
We see more donations from the Brook-
side Public School who participated in the
Stuff a Bus campaign and the Kinsmen's
donation to help with Health Care Profes-
sional Recruitment for Wingham and area
through funds raised at Music in the Fields.
The acknowledgement of achievements
was very evident through the awards given
at the Commencement Ceremony at F. E.
Madill. What better way to ensure a better
future than to help support those who are
just beginning their adult careers and
endeavors?
Although these are all wonderful exam-
ples of giving, it is a reality that there will
always be more needed in the future.
There will be more expansion of programs
and facilities. Ongoing research requires
ongoing funding. It takes more than a vil-
lage to raise our children anymore, it takes
an ever-expanding circle to address the
needs and provide the resources for
improvement, growth, knowledge and
skills to carry us all into the future.
Congratulations and a hearty
thank you to those who have
stepped up to take on the challenge
of representing the various causes,
who have participate in the fund-
raising events and also those who
have sponsored those who have

made the commitment to make a
difference. Your contributions will
make a big difference for many. Let's
keep the ranks of givers and helpers
growing. You never know when you
will be the one in need of help.
While it is honourable to pay it for-
ward, it is also prudent to pay ahead.

It's been another busy week around
Lucknow. Lucknow United Church held
their annual turkey supper at the Com-
munity Centre. At the same time, the
Lucknow Community Christian
Reformed Church held Tuesday's Table
at St. Peter's Parish Hall. I know that the
Tuesday's Table dinner was delicious as
I was there and I hear from a reliable
source that the United Church's supper
was fantastic.
Speaking of the Lucknow Community
CRC, the work in their church is coming
along and there is hope that they
"might" be back in their church by
Christmas.
This past weekend a harvest bazaar
was held in Ripley at St. Andrew's
United Church. There was something
for everyone including lunch.
Yesterday the Alzheimer Society held
a free education session at St. Helen's
Community Hall for anyone who
wished to attend. They provided
information, resources and programs
for people who are caregivers for family
members or friends.
There are a number of things happen-
ing in the community this weekend, the
Legion is holding a Hallowe'en Pub for
the older kids with prizes for the best
costumes while our younger children
are out trick or treating.
Speaking of Hallowe'en, there will be
a lot of children out and about this Fri-
day night so drive carefully and keep
your eyes open for children running
about. Children sometimes forget to
watch for traffic when they are excited
and having fun, so drive especially
slowly and carefully, we don't want any-
one's evening to end in tragedy.
This coming Saturday, the Legion is
holding their annual poppy drive, they
will be out looking for your support, so
give generously and help them with this
good cause.
Sympathy of the community to the
family of Robert Scott, 73, RR 1,
