Cut Off the
"Social Supply"
of Smokes
Grey Bruce Health Unit
Family and friends need to
stop being the go -to supplier
for under -age smokers. A
friend or relative may think
they are "just being nice" for
buying, or giving cigarettes
to a teenager. But, setting
someone up for an addic-
tion, disease or even death is
a "bad way to be nice."
"Bad ways to be nice" is a
campaign to help stop peo-
ple from supplying tobacco
to teenagers. Most under-
age smokers say they get
their cigarettes from a
"social source", their par-
ents, an older sibling, a rel-
ative or a friend. Less than
10 per cent of tobacco
retailers have sold to an
underage smoker. That
shows most teens are get-
ting their cigarettes from
those social sources.
Public Health wants any-
one supplying tobacco for a
teen, to visit
BadWaysToBeNice.com.
The website offers ideas for
how to say no to requests
for cigarettes.

don't think your reaction
should be any different
when a teen asks.

Lucknow UCW
Laura Lee Cayley
Constable Kevin Martin
attended the Lucknow UCW
Meeting where 50 people
gathered. He reminded eve-
ryone that even experienced
people (seniors) can be
taken in by phone calls,
computer messages, or
someone at the door. Always
question and verify all
requests and let the police
know of anyone suspicious.
"If it sounds too good to be
true, it probably is." Many
questions and experiences
were shared and handouts of
information were available.
"Give Thanks" was the
theme for worship led by
Marlene Struthers and Char-
lene McEwan. The offeretory
prayer was read by Laura Lee
Cayley. Ruth Ritchie played
for the hymn and did the
closing prayer.
Refreshments and a social
time followed.
The UCW members con-
tinued with the business.
The minutes were approved
and Diane Henderson gave
the treasurer's report. In
committee reports, catering
for coming events and the
turkey supper on October 21
were noted. The Bazaar will
be on November 1. Nimble
Fingers has given many
comfort quilts for those tak-
ing cancer treatments. Thank
you letters were read for vis-
its, gifts, lunches provided
and donations.
The Annual General Meet-
ing will begin with a turkey
dinner on December 2. The
meeting closed with the
UCW prayer.
