Candidates' survey looks
at poverty in Huron County
Huron County
Health Unit
A new survey asks munic-
ipal candidates in Huron
County for their thoughts on
reducing poverty in their
communities.
Hungry for Action in
Huron is part of a larger
initiative coordinated by
the Ontario Society of
Nutrition Professionals in
Public Health. Huron
County is one of several
counties in Ontario partici-
pating in the survey. About
120 surveys have been sent
out locally. Candidates are
asked how they define pov-
erty and what steps munici-
palitiescould take to tackle

"Poverty negatively
impacts health and the abil-
ity to create a healthy,
vibrant community," says
Janice Dunbar, community
developer at the Huron
County Health Unit. "The
fact that some people in our
communities cannot afford
basic needs, including
nutritious and sufficient
food, is a realconcern.
We've been fortunate in
Huron County to have poli-
ticians committed toad -
dressing poverty. This issue
continues to deserve the
attention of elected
officials."

Happy birthday to Jake
Alton who turned 7 on Sep-
tember 30.
New sheds have popped
up in the area with a new
red one at the Eli Shetler
place and another large
one on the Atlee Stutzman
farm, both on County rd. 1.
Fall raspberries are being
picked at the Henry Miller
farm and selling for $3.00 a
box.
The Alton boys, Jake and
Brett have spent a number
of weekends racing this
summer but race results
not available at this time.
On Sept. 29, Shag and
Joan Campbell of Dungan-
non took a load of fire-
wood to their friend Marge
Cummings in Alvinston,
and while in the area spent
the lunch hour with their
long time friends Mildred
and Cecil Maddock. This
was followed by a short
stop to see Marilyn
Dolbear.
Serena closed her store at
the Carlow Mercantile on
Sept 28th. Sorry to see her
go but her merchandise
will be available on line.
Log sawing results for the
Ripley fair are as fol-
lows. Mixed class first place
Mary and Jim Sloan, sec-
ond, Shag Campbell and
Emily Lotton, third Debbie
Gillies and Rob
Lowry. Men's class was won
by Jim and Joe, with Ken
and Rob Lowery taking sec-
ond place and Blair and
Don Smeltzer coming in
third. In the women's class,
Megan Lowry and Emily
Lotton, took first
place. Debbie Gillies and
Nancy Mifflin came in sec-
ond and Ann and Darlene
Smeltzer managed third
place.

erty and improves access

Candidates, along with
local business leaders, have
also been invited to the
Hungry for Action poverty
simulation in Clinton
November 4.
Candidates are being
asked to reply to the survey
by October 10. Results will
be posted on www.huron-
healthunit.ca.
