Grade 2 students at LCPS celebrated the hatching and release of their Monarch Butterflies. September 2014.
Monarch Butterflies Fly to Mexico
Joan Nelson
Mrs. Nelson's grade 2 class has
been busy raising Monarch Butter-
flies in September. The class was
very fortunate to be able to watch
two of the butterflies as they
emerged from their chrysalises. As
they come out, they have tiny
shrunken wings and fat abdomens.
Within a few minutes, the butterfly
pumps fluid from its body into the
wings and then then begins to gen-
tly flap them. It was an exciting
experience for all of us to get to
watch our babies emerge!
On Monday, September 22nd,
the last two beautiful butterflies
were sent on their journey to Mex-
ico. How exciting to think that they
have such a magical adventure
ahead of them! We wish them luck
and will watch for their offspring
who will be returning to Canada
next spring.
Unfortunately, we also had two
chrysalises that never
hatched. These were buried in the
Memorial Garden so they could
help to nourish our flowers.
