A stormy November 19,
2014 marked the kickoff for
both the Huron/Bruce "Pro-
ject Red Ribbon" through
Mothers Against Drunk
Driving (MADD) and the
Reduce Impaired Driving
Everywhere (RIDE) program
through Huron and South
Bruce OPP.
For the first time, Lucknow
was chosen as the holiday
season kick-off location for
the two programs as being on
the border of Huron and
Bruce Counties. President of
the Huron/Bruce chapter of
MADD Barbara Rintoul met
with Constable Adam Janes
of the South Bruce OPP and
Sergeant Russ Nesbitt of
Huron OPP to begin stopping
vehicles for the RIDE pro-
gram and giving out the red
ribbons from MADD.
Valerie Gillies/Lucknow Sentine
Motorists entering and exiting Lucknow on November 19, 2014
were the first to participate in the RIDE programs and Project
Red Ribbon as South Bruce OPP, Huron OPP and the Huron/Bruce
chapter of MADD joined to kick off the programs for the 2014-15
holiday season.

The Mission Statement for
MADD is "To stop impaired
driving and to support vic-
tims of this violent crime." To
do this MADD Canada sup-
ports victims, brings about
changes to impaired driving
legislation, raises awareness
and educates the public,
partners with local enforce-
ment agencies, liaises with
the media, educates you and
raises funds to support local
programs. Their research
concludes that every day, on
average, 4 Canadians are
killed due to impairment
related crashes and 175
more are injured.
The South Bruce Detach-
ment of the OPP provided
local statistics gathered from
644 RIDE programs. The
highest incidences of
impared driving occured
mainly on weekends with
30% being on Fridays, 27%
on Saturdays and 19% on
Sundays, with single digit
percentages the remaining 4
days. The locations with the
highest occurrences were
Brockton with 39.21%, fol-
lowed by Kincardine at
21.56%, Arran-Elderslie
17.64%, South Bruce 13.72
and Huron -Kinloss 7.84%. Of
these, 88.23% were male
drivers. The age of drivers
recorded from under 19 to 73
years old revealed that
impaired drivers were
mainly in the 19-23 yr -old
