Winter Driving
South Bruce OPP

OFFICERS INVESTIGATE
NUMEROUS CRASHES DUR-
ING FIRST SNOWFALL
Southern Bruce County experi-
enced the first taste of winter and
the members of the South Bruce
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
were kept busy responding to
motor vehicle collisions.
In a 24 hour period from 12:00
pm on November 13, 2014 until
12:00 pm on November 14,2014,
the South Bruce OPP responded
to 15 crashes. 12 were property
damage only, 2 were non -life
threatening injuries and 1 was a
fatal crash.
OPP states, "It's frustrating to see
this year after year; lives put at risk
because drivers don't adjust their
driving during winter months,
especially during the first snow-
fall," Acting Inspector Wayne
Thompson, Detachment Com-
mander, South Bruce. "I realize
that motorists can encounter some
brutal conditions in the lee ofLake
Huron, but the fact of the matter is
roads and weather don't cause
crashes - drivers do. There's no
better defense for winter driving
than to adjust your speed before
you have a problem. Rememberif
you see snow, go slow!'
TIME TO PREPARE FOR SAFE
WINTER DRIVING
The temperature is starting to
drop which means that winter will
soon be arriving in Bruce
County. High winds combined
with snowfall causes serious visi-
bility issues for drivers along the
Lake Huron shoreline. Each win-
ter, Bruce County residents and
visitors face some of the toughest
driving conditions around. The
South Bruce Ontario Provincial
Police (OPP) is asking drivers and
vehicle owners to start thinking
about safe winter driving.
Hard packed snow and ice
reduce traction. Blowing snow
affects your visibility. Leave your-
self more time to reach your desti-
nation in winter.
Snow tires are marked with a
peaked mountain and snowflake
to show they meet specific snow
traction performance require-
ments. Improved traction =
improved safety.
Carry a snow brush/ice scraper
in your vehicle. The law provides a
$110 fine for the driver not having
a clear view, but the conse-
quences can be far worse if you
hit someone.
Does your vehicle have a sur-
vival kit if you get stranded? A kit
list is available online at www.
mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/
winterdrive.
Drivers are encouraged to check
road and weather conditions
before they travel. Road informa-
tion is available online at www.
mto.gov.on.ca/english/traveller/
trip or by calling 1 866 471 8929.
Always adjust your driving to
the changing road and weather
conditions; an ordinary driver
reacts to road situations while a
good driver anticipates and

in person at the municipal office, by regular mail, or at the
CIBC Goderich branch only. Interac/debit card services are
accepted at the office as well as post-dated cheques for your
convenience. Telephone /internet banking is available through
most major banking institutions. Pre -authorized payment is
available by completing a form from the office and providing a
VOID cheque. You may also go online to our website, complete
and remit this form/void cheque electronically. After hour
payments may be left in the letter slot located at the front door.
Taxes not paid by the due date are subject to interest of 1.25%
per month. Failure to receive a tax notice does not relieve the
taxpayer from responsibility for payment nor the liability of
penalty charges for late payment.
avoids a crisis on the roads.
Acting Inspector Wayne
Thompson, Detachment Com-
mander, South Bruce OPP
advises, "Modern vehicles with
electronic traction control and
anti-lock brakes will help you
keep control, but your best
defense is to reduce your speed.
Slow down, stay alert, stay in con-
trol and arrive safely at your
destination."
5 DEATHS THIS WEEK ON
AREA ROADS
Members of the Ontario Pro-
vincial Police (OPP) have
responded to 4 separate collisions
this past week that have claimed
the lives of 5 citizens. The colli-
sions occurred on November 10
in Middlesex County, South
Bruce County and Elgin County
on November 13 and on Novem-
ber 14 in Lambton County.
Two of the deceased persons
were involved in collision with
farm vehicles. The OPP are warn-
ing all area motorists to be alert
for farm vehicles when traveling
on rural roads during the harvest
season. Farm vehicles are large
which makes it very difficult for
operators to see other vehicles
coming up from behind or those
attempting to pass them.
Whenever approaching a farm
vehicle from the rear, assume the
driver does not see you. Slow
down, wait until the road in front
is clear of any other vehicles and
you have ample room to
pass. When you pass, do so slowly
and make sure the operator of the
farm equipment sees you.
Do not underestimate the size
of farm vehicles. They are long
and wide and motorists must pass
them cautiously.
Operators of farm equipment
have to obey all the rules of the
road as well and share the road
with other motorists.
OPP Traffic Staff Sgt. Shawn
Johnson states, "Driver error con-
tinues to be the common denom-
inator in every collision we inves-
tigate. With the onset of wintery
weather, motorists need to adjust
their driving habits immediately
in order to prevent any further
injuries or deaths on our
highways!"
Road safety is a shared
responsibility.
