Lucknow Legion
Branch 309

The Remembrance Ban-
quet was held at the Luc -
know Legion Branch 309 on
Saturday, November 8, 2014.
Prior to the meal, a
social hour was held dur-
ing which it was a pleas-
ure to speak with 5 veter-
ans of WWII.
Jim Hunter, a retired jack-
of-all-trades remarked that
the Lucknow Legion is
doing a lot of good things,
but for himself, as he is get-
ting older it is harder for
him to be involved in get-
ting things done. Hunter
served in France and Bel-
gium during WWII. He
recalls one night he was
looking for some place to
sleep when he entered a
building. Hunter relates, "I
said to 5 Germans, 'I want
to sleep here so move on'
and they did!"
Art Bryce is 95 years old
and has retired from farm-
ing about 3 miles south of
Teeswater. He com-
mented, "This Legion
Branch is getting better all
the time. They are a good
bunch."
Gerald Wagner is retired
from the Lucknow Co-op.
During WWII he was in
London in Ordinance
Corps. Wagner married
while there. He lived in the
barracks at Queens Park
while his wife lived in an
apartment in London.
Don Ross is retired from
farming. He served from
1942-1945. He commented
that this year the Remem-
brance Day activities and
services are well covered on
account of what happened
in Quebec. He believes, "This
year the services may have
more turn out, although in
Lucknow attendance is usu-
ally good."
Warren Wylds is retired
from Dominion Roads
which was later bought out
by Volvo and became
Champion. He served from
1943-1946. During this
time he states, "I have
been all over: London,
Chatham, Windsor. I got
hurt in Ipperwash and that
ended my career." While in
the services Wylds met his
wife while she was working
for London Life. They were
married on November 15,
1947.
Legion President Craig
Crawford, currently work-
ing at Bruce Power, also
gave his thoughts on how
the recent tragedies
affected this year's activi-
ties. "There is a bigger run
on poppies and more peo-
ple are eager to wear them
this year."
Speaker at this year's
Remembrance Banquet was
John Maguire, Captain
(RCN), Canadian Military
Law. During the social hour
Maguire shared some of his
personal history and con-
nections to the area. He was
born in Stratford and went to
high school in Goderich. His
mother was a Campbell out
of Chepstow.
Maguire gave an inform-
ative history of his career,
from how he came to be in
the military as a Lawyer
and the many historical
developments he has
worked on from the Cold
War through to Afghani-
stan. He describes himself
as a career officer from
1984 until he left the regu-
lar forces in 2012. After
retirement he was called
back to consult on several

Did you know?...
That staggering vour maturities is a strategy that helps avoid having all of your eggs in one basket. It limits your exposure to
interest rate fluctuations. Invest only 20% of your funds to come due (mature) each year for 5 years. At each maturity you will
then always select the 5 year rate, which is usually the highest and still have access to 20% of your funds annually if needed.
